Ship name commentary[edit]

Notes on the article name, for anyone confused by the page movements:

In March 2016, the city of Fort Lauderdale, FL announced that an LCS would be named USS Fort Lauderdale. A day later, they recanted that claim, and stated that LPD-28 would be named USS Fort Lauderdale. No official announcement from the US Navy was made. This page was created in March 2016, apparently relying on the City of Fort Lauderdale's announcement as its source for the name.
By July 2016, the Navy still had not announced the ship's name, and a review of Navy press releases as recent as May 2016 showed the ship being referred to only by hull number (LPD-28) and not by any name. I changed the article title to "LPD-28" pending confirmation of ship name.
It was pointed out to me a few days ago (September 2016) that the Navy's publication of ship class information for USCG credentialing (now linked as a source on the article page) now identifies LPD-28 as the Fort Lauderdale. Other sources (such as the Navy Fact File on LPDs) have been recently updated to also report the name of the vessel as Fort Lauderdale. With multiple sources on the Navy's own website listing the ship's name, which corroborate the city of Fort Lauderdale's claim that the Navy notified it of the naming, I agreed that there were sufficient reliable sources to conclude the ship will be named Fort Lauderdale. Thus, I moved it back.

This explains the multiple article moves. Hopefully the article will now remain at its current title. Shelbystripes (talk) 15:38, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ref named "LPD-28 Keel"[edit]

@117.174.159.29: The "LPD-28 Keel" reference is used to support more than the keel date in the article body, and as such your change to use the HI press release is not an adequate substitute for the navyrecognition.com article. In particular, the "LPD-28 Keel" reference is used to provide a citation for the sentence that begins "The main design features...". —RP88 ^(talk) 11:56, 30 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the move request was: moved as requested per USS Mesa Verde (LPD-19) redirecting to USS Mesa Verde, USS John P. Murtha (LPD-26) redirecting to USS John P. Murtha, etc. and the explanation for the idiosyncrasies in the naming pattern to this point given above. This is believed to be an uncontroversial change so I am putting it through.
