My father, W. Clifford Tlachac, was the communications man(radio-telegrapher doing Morse code) on this submarine. In the late 1990's he revealed that after the war, a small group of 12 men were kept on to complete testing of the "pinging" device for torpedos. They were based in Long Beach and went out of various test cruises for at least a year after VJ Day. Then they would return and the scientists would adjust the devices and out again for more testing.

I can never find any other corroboration of this information and would love to have others who know of this to send me to a source for more data. My dad is still alive but has a form of dementia that has made his long term memory pretty dicey so he can't recall names very well.
