"performance/ Size"[edit]

"Performance Sacramento is considered a benchmark in West Coast shipbuilding. The ship and two of her sister ships, Seattle (AOE-3) and Detroit (AOE-4), are the largest ships ever built on the West Coast as of 2005. Only Iowa-class battleships and aircraft carriers have greater displacements than Sacramento." I want to debate this point. For Full load displacement of Navy/Military ships I agree with the point. However from a building point of View light displacement is a better measure of size. Displacement reflects a ships weight if placed on scales. She is listed for 54,000 tons for full load displacement ( if fully loaded with cargo & fuel, etc). I have not idea of Sacramento's light displacement. I also wonder if where built- NASSCO in San Diego has built any thing bigger by light displacement. The newer AOE were built there, and they have a full load displacement 100 tons less.- unknown again for their light displacement. 74.214.54.170 (talk) 19:33, 23 October 2010 (UTC). OK I pull out "Ship and Aircraft of the U.S. Fleet" (U.S.Naval Institute/ Norman Polmar). That lists the new AOE as 4000 tons less full load, 1000 tons more for light load. For both it lists the ships cargo capacity, both are the same for petroleum product capacity & same for dry store capacity. The newer AOE are 300 ton less for ammunition capacity, but 150 ton more for refrigerated cargo. Go to http://www.nassco.com/products-and-services/comm-design-construction.html The Alaksa class and TOTE RoRo vessels have the strong possibility of a higher light displacement (compare just the size- length/beam/draft. Actually Comparing this class to the Iowa Class battleships (or the Essex class CVs) - compare length/beam/draft / displacement -- ALl 3 are pretty close. This is proven from pictures circa 1990 during Desert Shield/Desert Storm - an AOE with a battleship either side, undertay and transferring fuel - are are essentially the same size by the picture . East or West Coast?

The Performance section is inconsistent. The first paragraph states USS Detroit was built on the west coast and the last one implies it was built on the east coast. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.197.230.160 (talk) 19:54, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
