Dada was not a movement at the time this play debuted. Should "Dada" be changed to mention that it was a "precursor to absurdist theater" perhaps? Or did it become a classic among the Dadaists? -- Wells_298

His plays were widely and wildly hated for their lack of respect to royalty (especially French royalty) but his works gained popularity as time went on.

Meaning of Ubu[edit]

It's a corruption of "Hébé", from M. Hébert, the teacher on whom the Ubu character was orginally based. I'm not aware of it having any other meaning. --Ryano 15:45, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pere Ubu[edit]

I`m new to wikipedia, so sorry if i`m somewhat irrelevant. It just seemed strange for me that neither on Ubu Roi page nor on Alfred Jarry page was the acclaimed experimental/post-punk music group Pere Ubu mentioned. Ubu Roi is a play by the French writer Alfred Jarry, first performed in Paris on December 10, 1896, at the Nouveau-Théâtre. Considered to be a wild, bizarre and comic play, significant for the way it overturns cultural rules, norms and conventions, it is now seen by some to have opened the door for what became known as modernism in the 20th century. This illustration by Jarry was included in the programme for the play's premiere.

I've cleaned the article up, and I think it looks fine now except for the "more citations needed" on the Adaptations section. It's fairly clear the information in that section is accurate and notable; they just need to have citations -- perhaps citations imported from the wiki articles they refer/link to, or from the non-English wikis of the countries the adaptations originated in.
