Caps[edit]

I've started all proper nouns with a captial, as per Wikipedia's Manual of Style. I do have some experience with Linux, so I know that commands entered on the prompt are case sensitive, but that doesn't matter in normal English sentences. (Compare: Konqueror) That said, I'm pretty sure that some of these are acronyms, and should thus be fully capitalized, but I don't feel confident doing this without a citation for the proper expansion. You will definitely want to propose this idea to a larger audience such as WP:PUMP before you run off rewriting the (tens of?) thousands articles relating to Unix and Linux. There has been a "silent consensus" or convention to lowercase Unix tools that are lowercased in their official documents. For example, I find it braindead to refer to the copy utility as "Cp", similarly to "Udev" and "Devfs", because in practice nobody capitalizes them.

The MoS used "Adidas" as an example, which sounds reasonable to me — the lower-case version is simply a part of the visual logo image. But I find it completely unrelated to this case, where it has nothing to do with marketing or advertisement, but is just a convention. -- intgr [talk] 11:56, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

dwlegg: The obvious thing chaps is just to put quote round unixy names, e.g. 'cp', 'udev', 'devfs'. nix/*bsd command names are case sensitive, not all are lowercase, such as Xorg, Xnest, or MAKEDEV. Applications with different cases are often considered different applications. Droas (talk) 07:58, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

BSD[edit]

Isn't udev in BSD as well as Linux? The article only shows Linux.

Not as far as I know; FreeBSD, DragonFly BSD, and Darwin all have entirely-in-kernel devfs implementations, without a corresponding user-mode daemon, and NetBSD and OpenBSD just have a regular /dev directory on the root file system. Possible false conclusion.[edit]

The statement: "In April 2012, udev's source tree was merged into systemd." may give one the impression that udev no longer exists outside of systemdm, which is simply not true. Perhaps the author might consider, "In April 2012, systemd added the udev source tree to systemd-udevd."?

It now says "In April 2012, udev's source tree was merged into the systemd source tree." I.e., it's part of the systemd project, but it's not part of the PID 1 daemon named "systemd", it's a separate daemon in that source tree, along with {systemd-}journald, {systemd-}logind, etc..
