Honor system[edit]

Removed the following:

"Stories indicate that in the past, patrons who did not have enough money to pay for groceries were trusted to leave the store with the groceries and bring in the money later based on the honor system."

Christian Values and Question of POV[edit]

It was claimed that the passages

Their stance towards alcohol has attracted criticism from many groups, Christian and non-Christian in the areas they serve, and led in general to a lower percentage of overall patrons than a store of their calibre might otherwise attract.
Their stance on closing for Sunday's however attracts little criticism in the region as it is a common practice due both to blue laws still enforced in some neighboring states, and similar practices by other Christian owned enterprises such as Chick-fil-A.

Introduced "Anti-Christian" POV into the article. This is categorically false. Ukrops is criticised BY other Christian groups for the above reasons. Many Christian groups take issue to the no alcohol policy citing that it creates a divisive mindset amoung Christians due to the alcoholic nature of communion and the fact that many religious groups in the area have no qualms with alcohol. The statement on the lack of criticism for Sunday closings is important for those reading the article unfamiliar with the religious climate of this part of the country who may be confused by the policy. Until you can support your claims of criticism with references, I will maintain that there is not a whole lot of criticism of Ukrops (by any kind of group, religious or not) due to their alcohol policy. MPS 8 July 2005 17:00 (UTC)

I am somewhat mystified how the business practice of having a bagger transport your groceries to your car is a manifestation of "Christian Values" or a Christian ethic. It is a sound and effective business practice that creates good will and is not uncommon in upscale grocery chains.

I don't think the stories of being allowed to return with money on your next visit are "apocryphal" or something that occured in the distant past. I have had this happen to me personally within the last two years. Main Secrtion[edit]

Ukrops is best known in the grocery business for their prepared food offerings. They were one of the first to market with their "Dinners for Two" and with complete Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Their selection of premade entrees and side dishes are extensive even today compared to other grocers. The claim "Their international is particularly good, often exceeding the offerings of local ethnic groceries." is not a proper sentence and is not supported by empirical evidence. Their international sections are well-stocked compared to Kroger, but certainly not comparable to the ethnic stores on Horsepen. Opinionated / Biased[edit]

This article is way too biased, opinionated and makes claims with no evidence or citations. For example:

"The company has gone steadily downhill..."

In what way? Where is the evidence?

"Joe's Market...is remarkably even MORE expensive than the Ukrop's locations!"

I do not think regular Ukrop's locations are expensive. What is with the word "more" in all capitals? And, you do not write sentences in an encyclopedia with exclamation points!

"Ukrop's itself is well known for the high price of their groceries, the quality of their store baked goods, and their tendency to carry exotic and otherwise hard to get ingredients."

Well known by who? Again, more opinions. All of the biased modifications that you noticed were all added by one user Wahoowill on 2 May. I think they qualify as vandalism, so I am going to revert them. Perhaps some work needs to be done to improve the NPOV of the original article, but I think that none of these edits are improvements. Andyrew2000 19:45, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Moving unsourced section to talk[edit]

This entire section remains unsourced since July 2007, so I am removing it from the article and depositing it here.

Christian values

Ukrop's claims their ownership's interpretation of Christianity influences various store policies, such as refusing to sell alcoholic beverages and remaining closed on Sundays. Other manifestations include signs in each store that say, "Let us visit our house of worship this weekend." Stores close by 10:00 p.m. so that employees can spend more time with their families.[citation needed]

While Ukrop's does sell tobacco products (except in their Roanoke store), their stance towards alcohol is unique because it may lead to lower sales figures and market share. Ukrop's decision not to sell alcohol however often means that in practice, ABC stores as well as wine and beer speciality shops are found very close by (often in the same strip mall) so that customers who wish to purchase alcohol can still do so conveniently.[citation needed]

Should have read this before editing the article yesterday, but I didn't -- recent edit notes the not-selling-alcohol and not-opening-Sundays realities, which are widely known and referenced in most of the press articles regarding the sale of the company, without attributing motive or discussing the stores next door. Updating in February 2010[edit]

This article will need to be updated in February 2010, AND NOT BEFORE to reflect it as a subsidiary of Giant-Carlisle once the sale is finalized.
