This redirect is written in American English, which has its own spelling conventions (color, defense, traveled) and some terms that are used in it may be different or absent from other varieties of English. According to the relevant style guide, this should not be changed without broad consensus.

Underline redirect[edit]

Technical a restriction I think, though otherwise it probably should redirect to Underscore instead. Space and underscore characters are treated equivalent, and they are stripped from the beginning and end of page names. See WP:Page name#Invalid page names. This “_” URL says “Bad title”, and this [[_]] wiki link is ignored. Vadmium (talk) 03:45, 6 April 2011 (UTC).[reply]

Double underline[edit]

"Plain Text"[edit]

Linking %CC%B2 to here[edit]

Use for text skimming[edit]

In large blocks of text you would normally have to read a sentence to know what its talking about. If you underline you need only read the underlined material which highlights the subject of the paragraph. Adding a bit on this. Basically, for historical reasons (printing has used italics for this for centuries) printing and book people think of underlining as a big no-no in printed text and that idea has carried over to computers (maybe because it stands out a bit too much). See this manual of legal writing which calls it 'a look mostly associated with supermarket tabloids'...) Wikipedia's own manual of style goes so far as to say text should never be underlined at all! American English[edit]

Merge[edit]

Until now, we have two articles, Underscore and Underline, that are essentially the same because the words are synonyms. I have taken the advice at WP:MERGE, been bold, and just merged them. Underscore becomes the main article, underline a redirect to underscore, because of WP:Common name: Google's Ngram viewer has underscore the clear winner^[1]
