Time[edit]

How long does it take to reach $1 Billion? I thought a unicorn meant it had to be in 5 years. I mean, General Electric or Mitsubishi are over $1B too.

Searches for "internet unicorn, "net unicorn" (etc?) should redirect to the page.[edit]

I think searches for Searches for "internet unicorn, "net unicorn" (etc?) should redirect to the page.

Nobody is going to do a search for "unicorn finance".

Why don't I fix it?

1) I don't like drama. See number two.

2) I don't know how. See number one.

If my suggestions are "controversial" - that's fine. The drama won't involve me.

Unicorn used in this sense is a financial term, and there is a link on the 'Unicorn (disambiguation)' page. But I don't see that a redirect from, say, 'Internet unicorn' could do any harm so I'll create it now and we'll see what happens! JezGrove (talk) 23:19, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

They don't have to be about finance[edit]

Not all of them are in the financial sector. I think the article should have a different name.172.58.95.8 (talk) 21:35, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I can see why that would be confusing, but the "finance" designation refers to the term being a finance term, not that the companies themselves are in the financial industry. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 17:53, 21 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

yet to pay a dividend ?[edit]

As I understand it, few if any unicorns have ever paid a dividend to shareholders, as opposed to amassing huge Market Value from curious and adventurous investors. The orignal meaning ( ? ten years ago, in the Age of Dinosaurs..) referred to a unicorn character in a Lewis Caroll children's book, who tells the protagonist something like "I know I am not real, but if you believe in me, I will believe in you..". I am surprised not to see this reference here. I concede of course that an expression may alter its meaning drastically in a short time, especially in the finance industry, and particularly perhaps in this present context of heady optimism. RfC related to notability of unicorn funding rounds[edit]

WP:NCORP implies that all examples of raised capital are trivial Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies)#Examples of trivial coverage. I started an RfC to discuss whether unicorn funding rounds are more notable than smaller/earlier rounds, such as seed or Series A, and are therefore not trivial. I'm not saying that the unicorn funding makes a company inherently notable, only that it's not trivial. The discussion seems to have tapered off, and I thought editors who watch this page and have an interest in finance might be able to participate and share their perspective. Here's the discussion: Wikipedia talk:Notability (organizations and companies)#RfC about coverage of unicorn funding rounds. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 18:05, 21 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

SpaceX not a superunicorn with $150 billion valuation[edit]

Ridiculous! SpaceX is not a superunicorn with a merely $150 billion valuation 89.205.129.236 (talk) 19:28, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
