Relocation of EUCOM from France to Germany in 1967[edit]

The current version of the Article states: "In 1966, disagreements within NATO over involvement in the Vietnam War prompted France to demand the removal of all US and NATO headquarters and forces from French soil.[citation needed". I was unable to find any authority or support for the proposition that it was a disagreement concerning Vietnam that led to the French demand the US (and NATO) depart.

Rather, this NATO Allied Command Operations site <http://www.aco.nato.int/page1463252.aspx> supports the position that the French were unhappy about what they perceived to be their inability to more greatly influence NATO military policy, and wanted to increase their global influence and status, and says, "In February 1966 President de Gaulle stated that the changed world situation "stripped of justification” NATO's military integration and that France was therefore re-establishing her sovereignty over French territory. As a result, all forces within France's borders would have to come under French control by April 1969. Soon afterward, France announced that it was withdrawing from the headquarters of Allied Command Europe and that SHAPE and its subordinate headquarters Allied Forces Central Europe (AFCENT) must leave French territory by April 1967."

It looks as though the demand that "all forces within France's borders would have to come under French control" coupled with the demand that SHAPE headquarters and subordinate headquarters leave France by April 1967 were the impetus for the decision by USEUCOM to move from France to Stuttgart.

Unless someone can either provide support for the statement that this was a disagreement about Vietnam, or show some reason to believe that the move was not based on France wanting to increase its global influence and status by being more independent militarily, I would propose to edit the edit the sentence as it now appears to read somewhat as follows: "In 1966, following disagreements by the French with certain NATO military policies, President de Gaulle stated that all forces within France's borders would have to come under French control by April 1969. Soon afterward, France announced that SHAPE and its subordinate headquarters must leave French territory by April 1967." Citation would be to the ACO webpage mentioned above.

United States Forces Azores[edit]

I note that although the History section includes a short discussion of the Iceland Defense Force, its accession to EUCOM in 2002 and its termination in 2006, similar treatment is not accorded United States Forces Azores. I no longer have access to the detailed history of that subordinate Unified Command of USEUCOM, but perhaps someone who does would be willing to add a sentence or two.

Mistake in Euler diagram?[edit]

I believe there is a mistake in the Euler diagram of European alliances (Section 1: history and operations). Denmark seems to be corrently placed within the EU but incorectly outside NATO. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.62.117.215 (talk) 10:41, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
