Updated this article[edit]

This article and the article "Naval Armed Guard" duplicated the same subject. Looking at both articles, I merged the text from both articles into this page that now appears comprehensive. At the same time, I have made "Naval Armed Guard" a re-direct to this "United States Navy Armed Guard" article. World War I[edit]

Though this article states that the Armed Guard was established in World War Two, I have come across references to Armed Guard units aboard ships during World War One, for example on USS St. Louis (1894). dawkeye (talk) 15:07, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct. The Naval Armed Guard was first organized in WWI. They served on 384 ships and were deactivated at the end of the war, and the 1919 Neutrality Act, Sec 6 prohibited the arming of US Merchant ships. In Nov 1941, this act was repealed and the USNAG was reactivated. Oldfarm (talk) 06:10, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Did armed guards have unit designations, or was each one instead considered a part of a ship's crew? Was there some overall command, training program, etc.? Terry Thorgaard (talk) 17:37, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
