Non-Prior Service[edit]

I have heard that the reduced (17-day) boot camp for Non-Prior Service members is being eliminated. I will post the corrections as soon as I see official documentation, unless anyone gets word first. Adamkik 08:35, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

since the above post was written, im assuming this isnt true, they still have the Accelerated Initial Accession (AIA) and the Advanced Grade Placement (AGP) programs, advertised on their websites, which lets you go to a two week bootcamp. Then when you go to your duty station, you are in a undesignated rating, they choose where they need you and then you have 36 months to complete on the job training to qualify in said rating.68.93.61.59 (talk) 01:03, 17 November 2008 (UTC)j.crowson[reply]

Categories, Components and Status[edit]

These are several related concepts that are widely misunderstood. Someone should detail them or link to primary or well-established references:

There is general confusion in the public as to the meaning of "active."

The US Navy Reserve does have several components:

   Ready Reserve (is "active")
       Selected Ready Reserve (drillers)
       Individual Ready Reserve
   Standby Reserve (is "active", too?)
   Fleet Reserve
   Retired Reserve

It is notable that there are different recall authorities for members of the different components.

There are the new semi-official, silly names: Active Component and Reserve Component.

There is the old semi-official name: Active Navy

It is not widely understood that reservists on active duty are still members of the reserves.

Officially speaking, member still has a service (USN), branch (USNR) and class (e.g., R [Ready]), and a duty status (ACDU, ACDUTRA, ADSW, IDT/IDTT [regular or additional], or not in a duty status).

Sorry, this all way too much for me to smooth out right now but it really is important for both members of the reserves and members of the public who are affected by the status of reserve members. --Short story: My jury summons questionnaire asked if I was an active member of the U.S. Armed Forces. As a Selected Reserve member, I certainly am but I'm not currently on active duty. I don't think they wanted me to answer "Yes."

John Lehman[edit]

Anyone know the legal framework of how the SecNav can be actively serving in the Naval Reserve at the same time? I think John Lehman did this. -OberRanks (talk) 02:49, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Correct John Lehman was an "active Drilling Reservist" at the same time as the Secretary of Navy. He was a member of the Reserves for several years before becoming SecNav. He became Secretary of the Navy at 38- a very young age. He was Commander (O-5) , NFO, Bombadier/ Navigator for A-6 Aircraft. Typical age matching full active Duty Commanders - yet was on one sense senior to Admirals that he commanded as SECNAV. He also prior to becoming SecNav had NO political / government based positions (unusual for SecNav). The Current as I write this SECNAV is a USNA graduate, was a DDG Commanding Officer before retirement, and no prior political / government based positions. I don't think there is any existing framework to prevent or allow this Wfoj3 (talk) 23:54, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

List of Commanders (Office of the Chief of Naval Reserve[edit]

The Office of the Chief of Naval Reserve was established as Director of Naval Reserve in April 1973. There have been 12 commanders and I would like to include this list on the page. Does anyone have argument or advice? Bullmoosebell (talk) 08:39, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
