Untitled[edit]

United States national soccer team presently redirs to United States men's national soccer team, whereas United States national football team is this disambig page with links to both USmnst and United States women's national soccer team. I propose that we:

  1. move the disambig page to United States national soccer team, since soccer is the prevailing term in the US and both the MNT and WNT are senior national soccer teams.
  2. redir USnft to USnst, which should happen anyway by moving the page.

As a consequence, users typing in both USnft (Wikipedia standard) and USnst (prevailing US usage) will see the disambig page. This is an improvement because right now "football" fans see the disambig, but "soccer" fans default to the men's. (IMO this setup should be the standard for all nations with women's teams, except that football should override soccer where appropriate, but that's a battle for a different day eh?)

Please state any objections. Cheers, PhilipR 00:02, 31 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No objections stated; moved. - PhilipR 17:46, 18 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
In essence the exact opponsite of the status quo ante was adopted by virtue of the edit in December 2005 to United States national football team in order to standardize {{nft|United States}}. I'm all for using templates to make things easier, but I don't think the implicit sexism exhibited by Wikipedians from other footballing nations needs to inform how the US national teams are set up. Why can't nft wikilink to {{{1}}} men's national football team, and those redirs go here? Or better yet, doesn't MediaWiki support "if exists" tags now?
At any rate, I consider the present status quo unsatisfactory. The United States has two senior association football national teams of similar stature so defaulting to one isn't appropriate. - PhilipR 03:57, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You can call it sexist but the job of Wikipedia is descriptive, not prescriptive. The fact is, men’s soccer is much more prominent, both domestically and on the international stage. I see no reason for this page to not live at United States national football team—just like every other country on the planet, even the ones where the word “soccer” is normally used. —Wiki Wikardo 02:52, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
