Article layout

How about some Iowa(as in the state) pride. Maybe someone can update this page to use the nice clean university information template like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iowa_State_University

AAU

Association Of American Universities is one of the nation's most prestigious associations of research universities. It's an important that this be mentioned in the article as the University of Iowa is "comparable" to other elite research institutions in North America. See Association of American Universities for more info.

Rural v. Suburban

Does a population of 62,000 really qualify Iowa City as a suburban city? The closest big city Cedar Rapids is 120 thousand and that's 20 miles away with no continuity between the two cities.

Iowa City is kinda of a suburb to the University. But no, I'd not call it a suburb of Cedar Rapids. Bjsiders 06:08, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

It's strange to even consider Iowa City being a suburb of any other city, let alone a suburb of the University. The university is just very well integrated into Iowa city. I wouldn't even call Coralville a suburb of Iowa City, though there probably is a better argument for that case than for calling IC a suburb of Cedar Rapids. Taajikhan 23:19, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Expansion Needed

This article seems to be lacking a lot. It would be nice to add to this article, as well as format it a little better. Maybe one day get it up to par with MIT's. KMSatoh202 07:43, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Under the Athletic section, I deleted a sentence that said the UI's biggest rivals were Iowa State, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Nebraska. Hawkeye Dollars

"Hawkeye Dollars are an added feature to the meal plans. Want to treat a parent, friends, or guest to a Market Place meal? Hawkeye Dollars may be used as cash on a declining basis at either location. Students, faculty, and staff, who don't have a meal plan, may purchase Hawkeye dollars in $50 increments (cash, check, or University ID). Students who already have Hawkeye dollars may add to their account, also in $50 increments. Hawkeye dollars may also be used at any Iowa Memorial Union food service operation, Campus Satellite Food Services, or Campus C-Store. Specifically: Hillcrest and Burge Market Places, C-Stores located in the IMU, Mayflower, and Hillcrest, Business Building Pat's Diner, Law Building Canteen, Dental Science Building Filling Station, College of Medicine EMRB and MERF Buildings, food carts at University Services Building, Lindquist Center, Nursing Building, Main Library, Art History Building, and Oakdale Hall. Hawkeye dollars expire when the account balance reaches $0 or at the close of business on Sunday, May 13, 2007. No refunds will be issued for any unused balance in the account."

I would like to discuss whether this mandatory option is really necessary for the residents or not. There was not such system before my graduation. Does anyone know the reason why the option was added to the meal plan? I do not find any point in it.

I do think it's convenient because it's essentially a $100 per semester debit account that you can use at most stores on campus. However, I don't think that it should be mandatory. Perhaps they use it for an additional source of income from all the Hawkeye dollars that are unused at the end of spring semester? I also think that it gives parents more peace of mind because instead of sending their kids money that can be used on alcohol/bars/etc., they can just put money into the account and basically only school supplies, clothing, books, and food can be bought with it.

2011 faculty e-mail

A couple of edits have recently disputed the inclusion of a paragraph describing an e-mail sent in 2011 by a faculty member. The paragraph in question:

On April 18, 2011, anthropology and women's studies professor Ellen Lewin responded to a campus-wide email from the University of Iowa College Republicans relating to an "Animal Rights Barbecue" and for using the term "coming out" with respect to being Republican with the controversial response of "F*** YOU REPUBLICANS!"[1] The response eventually drew nationwide attention.[2]

Can those who advocate for including this material please make their case? It seems like an isolated and trivial incident that doesn't warrant mention in an encyclopedia article about the entirety of this university. If it were part of a section where it contributed to a larger point then I could see it being informative for readers. But without it being integrated with other material it's just an odd, one-off incident that doesn't seem to be worth mentioning because it doesn't tell the reader anything. I primarily reverted its removal as there was no explanation in the edit summary such as you provided above, and the situation is well-sourced. While you are correct that it doesn't (as far as I'm aware) have much relevance to the university as a whole, to me it seems about as important as the minor tornado damage to a parking garage and the designation of IC as a City of Literature. To me, at least, none of those seem nearly as relevant as the "historic firsts", the shooting, or the flood which led to a massive restructuring/renovation of campus buildings located near the river. I'm not particularly tied to those other incidents but I lean towards keeping them in the article as they are interesting and seem relevant. However, they might be better in different sections or just need to be rewritten. ElKevbo (talk) 16:33, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
I personally think the response to the mass-email is interesting as well, but since it's a BLP situation I have no objections to its removal now that concerns have been voiced about it. As far as reworking the other two bits I mentioned goes... I'm afraid it's not going to be terribly high on my priority list, so they may as well stay as and where they are for now. There is much too much abut disasters here in this article. Why is this so? Are the writers so limited that they can think of nothing else?
There is nothing here about great accomplishments at the Univ. of Iowa, including the discovery of the Van Allen Radiation Belts by James A. Van Allen of this university. There is no mention at all of anyone from this university:
1. Winning a Nobel Prize
2. Winning a Pulitzer Prize
3. Winning awards for outstanding college teaching
4. Winning the Presidential Medal of Science, such as James A. Van Allen in 1987
5. Becoming a member of the National Academy of Sciences
6. Working with the National Institutes of Health
7. Becoming a member of the National Academy of Engineering
We could think of many other recognizable accomplishments in the arts, the sciences, and the humanities. We are left to believe that the University of Iowa does not have any of these!

Lead revert

I've reverted a edit to expand the lead in a manner that I believe violates WP:LEAD. The lead is supposed to be a summary of high-level, non-controversial information about the article, not a listing of detailed information. The lead for this article should also not extend beyond 2-3 paragraphs, since the body of the article itself contains only about 19,000 characters. —Eustress talk 13:45, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
