Center of Excellence in DevCom

Please note that there's no such thing as a center of excellence in development communication. There's only the CoE in Communication Education, which the College of DevCom shares with the College of MassCom in Diliman, the only 2 CoEs recognized by CHED.

User 125.60.243.22 (a vandal, according to the discussion below) changed it back to CoE for development communication. I've updated it - the field is for "communication arts."24.205.39.3 (talk) 00:28, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Proper University name

I think the better format is "University of the Philippines Los Baños" without the comma. University offices and departments use this name. Commas or hypens are not used. Thank you. --hecky —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.71.19.98 (talk) 19:54, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

Name dropping

Kindly refrain from promoting your respective organizations thru the alumni list. Instead of helping it may even give a negative image of your organization.

FROM WIKIPEDIA: Purposes for name dropping

Name dropping is used to position oneself within a social hierarchy. It is often used to create a sense of superiority by raising one's status. By implying (or directly asserting) a connection to people of high status, the name-dropper hopes to raise his or her own social status to a level closer to that of those whose names he or she has dropped, and thus elevate himself or herself above present company. Picture image file of the Oblation and other UPLB symbols

Kindly post only high-quality pictures of campus sites and refrain from posting "unattractive" sites. I hope none of you will take this personally, but the humanities building is one of the ugliest in the campus. Unless somebody actually takes a "good" photo of it, I'm removing it from the wiki page in the meantime.Joe_fob

I think that this page needs an picture/image file of UPLB's oblation (it would be better if there are also pictures of Mariang Banga and the other statues in Carabao Park) as they are the symbols of UPLB. I would be glad to help (I have an image of UPLB's oblation, Mariang Banga and the others) but I don't much about this Wikipedia thingy.

I can be contacted at freakish-wikipedia @ spambob dot net [ spam-proofed, remove spaces and replace the dot with '.' (without the quotes) ]

--Oblation pics are quite common already, so I think it would be much better to post pics of places in UPLB not usually frequented by tourists, like the Agriculture and Life Sciences Complex (a lot of people don't even know this exists) where many of UPLB's research institutes are located -Joe Fob

List of Student Organizations

List will be alphabetized, disregarding UP (or UPLB) if it appears on the start of the name of any org (Please keep this in mind when adding anything to the list, thanks!). If the list gets too long, it is possible for it to have a separate article like that of UP Diliman (List_of_UP_Diliman_student_organizations). To those who keep on changing the format of their organization's name to boldface, please stop. Thanks! (Check out the wikipedia gudelines please) Meynardtengco 03:17, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

List layout turned into two columns. The list is already too long... Meynardtengco 14:11, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

also, @Joe Fob, you might have mistaken the UP Athletics Club as the UPLB Track and Field/Athletics Varsity, its different from that, as far as i know, the person who placed the org name in the list included a link to WWE (i dunno who removed that link, forgot to check in the article history, just check the history, hehe) so i suppose they're into WWE as fans, thus possibly a Hobby org, i'm placing that classification (Hobby Oriented) in the list but i'm not sure if such classification exists with the Office of Student Affairs (OSA). I'll place UPAC in that classification unless someone who knows their OSA recognition details corrects the classification. (If ever you have thought of UPAC as a Track and Field club, i'm sure they're not... coz i'm with the T&F Varsity, we have our own organization: MACRunners, but if you are sure they're recognized as another sports oriented org, do edit the list) :)

--- ughhhh! people, please to check your edits! you may also consult the history page for previous edits regarding do's and dont's Meynardtengco 14:07, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Vandalism detected

A user with IP address 125.60.243.22 has been caught vandalizing the site on December 18, 2006. He/she, in particular, reduced the number of UPLB Centers of Excellence from 8 to 5 and deleted the international exchange partnerships of UPLB (Yale, ADB, Purdue, MSU, etc). Kindly take note of this user to prevent him from vandalizing the site again. Thanks. - Joe Fob

Mabuhay!

I really love this informative article. It is also relevant to alumni who are out of the country. i read the list of oragnizations and the UPLB Genetics Society is also known as UPLB GENESOC among the UPLB community. More power to wikipedia. keep on rockin'! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.52.169.150 (talk) 07:23, 29 December 2006 (UTC).

--I've edited the entry upon request. -Joe Fob

  • btw, @Joe Fob, UPLB is more than a "public research" university: "The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), a coeducational, publicly funded academic, research and extension institution, is one of the six constituent universities of the University of the Philippines System" ;-) Meynardtengco 03:17, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Centers of Excellence

Please note that there's no such thing as a Center of Excellence in Development Communication. The College is recognized as a Center of Excellence in Communication Arts/Teaching. You can verify this with CHED.

I've heard that the Institute of Computer Science was recently recognized as a Center of Excellence in Computer Science/Information Technology - can somebody verify this please? Thanks! --Joe_fob

@Joe Fob, they're Centers of Excellence, not all are called National Centers of Excellence since the centers of excellence are classified according to region, see CHED’s Centers of Excellence/Development (COEs/CODs)

also, the Institute of Computer Science is recognized as a Center of Development for Excellence (see UPLB Website)

--> But they never update the UPLB website. The Institute of Stat was designated as center of development last year, and they havent included it in their site.

--> The UPLB webSite is not updated. The College of Development Communication has been designated as a National Center of Excellence in Communication Arts, and the Institute of Computer Science and the Institute of Statistics have been designated as National Center of Excellence in Information Technology an Center of Development in Statistics respectively.

Request to Move Student Organization Section

It seems that the section for Student Organizations is longer than the main article. In the case that the list is completed (ask SOAD-OSA for complete list), the article will become very long and will take much longer to load. I request the section be moved to a new article. -- Vekou 12:15, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

I agree. joe_fob

Pegaraw?

This is the first time I heard that statue called by that name. I was a student there in 1998-2003, also a high schooler there in 1994-1998, and I believe it is more commonly called 'carasus' and less commonly called as 'pegabaw'. Is it really more commonly called 'pegaraw' nowadays?

Yup. I remember Carasus! I prefer that! :-D But yeah, Pegarao has pretty much become the dominant term. What about the Academic Heritage Memorial Tower, though? I think the dominant name now is "Kwek Kwek Tower", while some of the other names I've heard are "Flame of Recca" and Painter's Club Monument (because of an alleged similarity in appearance to a paintbrush...) hehe. Trust the LB community to come up with humorous names for everything. (Think white house, peach house, pink house, crayon box! And of course, the ever-present batcave... hehe. There really should be a section (or a separate article? Covering changes in campus culture over the years. I myself was around from 1996 to 2006, by the way. From Student to Assistant Prof.) - RE de Leon, DevCom batch 96 (I suppose this still fits the criteria of 'talking about the article' rather than the subject? Sorry if it's kinda halfway through both. hehe. Alternativity 16:29, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

New ISI-indexed journals based in UPLB

--202.92.144.2 06:41, 17 August 2007 (UTC) Although the Philippine Agricultural Scientist is the first ISI-indexed journal in the Philippines, there are now other journals based in UPLB that have been included in the Thomson Scientific masterlist:

Asia Life Sciences based at the Institute of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences

Philippine Entomologist Published by the Philippine Association of Entomologists based at the (Department of Entomology) Crop Protection Cluster, College of Agriculture

Philippine Journal of Crop Science Published by the Crop Science Society of the Philippines based at UPLB

Philippine Journal of Veterinary Medicine based at the College of Veterinary Medicine

Internal Links for noted professors and Alumni

I just added Nora C. Quebral to the list of noted professors and Alumni, and realized, most of these people have their own wikipedia entries. Shouldn't there be an internal link to them? Alternativity 18:57, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Up centennial logo.jpg

Image:Up centennial logo.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Latest Improvements (as of May 30th 2008)

I've added recent Nobel Prize winners from the College of Forestry and Natural Resources (Congrats!!) and updated the list of thomson-accredited journals based at UPLB.

I created new pages for Degree Programs, Student Organizations, Campus sights and media production locations to lessen the clutter and overall file size. The links are located at the see also section. I also divided notable alumni by themes and converted the bullet list into sentences and paragraphs.

UPLB history, acad programs, research, campus life

Sections on UPLB's history, academics and research are now up. If you have any corrections or additions, please type them here. Make sure that they are verifiable by a web source. Thanks.Joe_fob

Good article nomination

This entry is a good article nominee. It would be great for a registered wikipedia user to review the article and classify it as a "good article" if he/she thinks it's qualified. Since I'm a major contributor and nominator of the article, I'm not allowed to review and approve it (for obvious reasons). For details check out the header (top part of this page). Joe_fob

More editors

I need more people to edit this article to make it more "stable". Please include a web reference if you wish to add new stuff. Thanks.

GA Review

This review is transcluded from Talk:University of the Philippines, Los Baños/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review. GA review – see WP:WIAGA for criteria

Good for start article, but requires heavy editing for GA status. Epicadam (talk) 05:59, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

  1. Is it reasonably well written?
    A. Prose quality:
There is no flow to the writing, especially lead section. There seems to be random bits of trivia in the lead such as "Several buildings at UPLB were designed by National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin." Parts of the article read as if they were translated directly from another language as some word choices seem peculiar. Facts are repeated needlessly throughout the article, such as the "land mass" of the university (I assume that means "total area").
    B. MoS compliance:
Heavy editing is required to bring up to MoS standards. Besides grammatical and style issues, the article is littered with vague statements like "With more than 500 PhDs and over 300 Master of Science degree holders, UPLB has one of the highest concentrations of scientific expertise and experience in the world."
  2. Is it factually accurate and verifiable?
    A. References to sources:
    B. Citation of reliable sources where necessary:
Entire paragraphs and sections are left without citations, especially Notable Alumni.
    C. No original research:
There seems to be heavy OR in sections, especially "Campus Life."
  3. Is it broad in its coverage?
    A. Major aspects:
    B. Focused:
  4. Is it neutral?
    Fair representation without bias:
Article uses glorified language to describe the university. Many of the references come from the university's own promotional material.
  5. Is it stable?
    No edit wars, etc:
Article has undergone massive changes by one user very recently. Not stable.
  6. Does it contain images to illustrate the topic?
    A. Images are copyright tagged, and non-free images have fair use rationales:
Images do not all have copyright clearance. Some images claim copyright release as original works by owner, yet the pictures are from the 1930s. I therefore doubt the authenticity of those copyright claims.
    B. Images are provided where possible and appropriate, with suitable captions:
There are numerous pictures of campus buildings, even in sections that do not relate to that subject. Other pictures are generic and do not add to the article's usefulness.
  7. Overall:
    Pass or Fail:
I recognize that this page has undergone massive changes to flesh out material, provide sources and contribute to the overall quality of Wikipedia; however, the article needs serious improvements in prose, clarity, neutrality, organization and valid references. See McGill University for example of GA article.

First, I apologize for the late review. I somehow didn't get the page added to my watch list. Unfortunately, however, this article still does not yet qualify for GA status. There are still issues with the prose, sourcing, and content that prohibit UPLB from being promoted. Hopefully the editors will be able to take a look at some of the GA articles at Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities/Accomplishments, or enlist the help of the editors there to get UPLB up to GA status.
