Billingsley National Championships[edit]

I was about to write:

The Billingsley Report retroactively named Vanderbilt national champions for 1906 and 1911, with an 8-1 record each year.

But Billingsley's site lists different winners than other sites including ncaa.org. What gives? - PhilipR 22:08, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Table on recent wins over SEC opponents[edit]

I deleted the table of recent wins over SEC opponents in favor of an expanded section on the overall wins and losses of the Vanderbilt program. This probably presents a more NPOV for the article (i.e., less "look how pitiful Vanderbilt is"). I admit I'm a Vandy alum/booster, but nonetheless, I think a neutral person would agree that no other SEC school has such a table (and the overall record indicates Vanderbilt's general weakness from the 1950-2000 period). Diezba 10:48, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you're probably right about the POV. Certainly no other SEC program has such a table and it's not expected. I put it in because I find that info interesting (as a VU fan) but it could probably be presented in a more theoretically objective way, like a color-coded table for each series or something. That way when we go 10-2 the next dozen seasons, we don't have to worry about it losing meaning. Cheers, PhilipR a/k/a PhilipVU94 08:29, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Year By Year Records[edit]

I added the year by year records table with the data coming from the VU media guide. I'm not sure if it belongs where it is now, in its own section, or somewhere else. Someone with more "wiki knowledge" can probably find its correct home. Wpride33 16:58, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jess Neely[edit]

According to the Jess Neely article, he played at Vandy 1920-22 and coached 1924-1966 at Rhodes, Clemson, and Rice. The Hall of Fame table should corrected as it lists him as Vandy coach 1924-1966 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.154.2.124 (talk) 14:20, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There have been obvious hijackings of this page by University of Tennessee supporters. I am attempting to clean them up. Please consider protection. DavidSteinle (talk) 00:39, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Split history into a separate article[edit]

I think a History of Vanderbilt Commodores football article is merited. Right now this article is at ~150,000 bites, and over half of that is the history section. Lizard (talk) 06:26, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe. There's a lot of material. Virginia and Vandy are the Babylon and Egypt of Southern football. As they have long been dormant, it would seem odd to give them more treatment than e. g. the Gators. Cake (talk) 22:29, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Tennessee state champions[edit]

Sewanee media guides note they were the 1892 state champions. Tennessee notes they never had even a state championship before 1914. It seems safe to assume Vandy was the 1890, 1891, 1893, and 1894 state champion before challenging for a southern title in 1895, but I would like a source. (if such a term is new to you see e. g. 1904 Florida State College football team or 1891 Nebraska Old Gold Knights football team). Nashville would seem the only other option. I found this image while poking through the orphaned free images backlog, and wondered if it's still current/relevant for this article? ♠PMC(talk) 19:40, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

When did Dudley Field become commonly known as Vanderbilt Stadium?[edit]

Per WP:COMMONNAME, we should use the name that was most commonly used during the season at issue. After 1981, the field was officially known as "Dudley Field" and the overall stadium as "Vanderbilt Stadium". However, it took several years for the stadium name to become the more common name for the home football venue. A search of Newspapers.com shows that "Dudley Field" remained the common name for Vandy's home venue until 1987. I've collected the newspaper "hits" data below (limited to Tennessee newspapers to avoid contamination of the survey with references to Dudley Field (El Paso)):

  • 1982: 426 "Dudley Field" vs 116 "Vanderbilt Stadium" (4-to-1 in favor of Dudley)
  • 1983: 288 "Dudley Field" vs 106 "Vanderbilt Stadium" (> 2-to-1 in favor of Dudley)
  • 1984: 355 "Dudley Field" vs 141 "Vanderbilt Stadium" (> 2-to-1 in favor of Dudley)
  • 1985: 241 "Dudley Field" vs 110 "Vanderbilt Stadium" (> 2-to-1 in favor of Dudley)
  • 1986: 272 "Dudley Field" vs 105 "Vanderbilt Stadium" (> 2-to-1 in favor of Dudley)
  • 1987: 200 "Dudley Field" vs 126 "Vanderbilt Stadium" (< 2-to-1 in favor of Dudley)

  • 1988: 275 "Dudley Field" vs 342 "Vanderbilt Stadium" (first year in which Dudley was not the more common name)
  • 1989: 222 "Dudley Field" vs 263 "Vanderbilt Stadium" (second consecutive year in which Dudley was not the more common name)
  • 1990: 228 "Dudley Field" vs 492 "Vanderbilt Stadium" (> 2-to-1 in favor of Vanderbilt Stadium)
  • 1991: 185 "Dudley Field" vs 360 "Vanderbilt Stadium" (2-to-1 in favor of Vanderbilt Stadium)

This suggests that the "Vanderbilt Stadium" didn't become the common name until 1988. Accordingly, in season articles prior to 1988, I think we should be citing Vanderbilt's home football venue as "Dudley Field". I am pinging Vanderbilt editors for their input. @MisterCake: @Patriarca12: I am also pinging @Jweiss11: as he weighed in at a particular article. Cbl62 (talk) 07:14, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

While may have taken that long to catch on, was winter 1980 when I think ripped down all but one section of the old Dudley Field stands, hence needing another name. There's the further curiosity of Old Dudley Field meaning Curry Field, pre 1922. See here. Cake (talk) 20:55, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
PS Cbl when you get a chance I'd really appreciate a look over of the Georgia Tech-Vandy rivalry page. It seems to me every game from 1892 to 1928 is notable, for instance. Cake (talk) 15:44, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
