Varian / Agilent[edit]

Resolved

The following was copied from the helpdesk by Tiggerjay (talk)

The Wikl article re Varian Associates states that Varian was acquired by Agilent Technogies in May 2010. This is not true.
Previously the article states that April 2 1999 Varian divided into three separate companies, Varian Medical Systems, Varian Semiconductor and Varian Instruments, VARI.
VARI was acquired by Agilent. The other entities remain independent.

Historical note: original erroneous info added in good faith by User:Nobody Ent,[1] who evidently didn't realize that the company name was used in several different iterations and confused the issue. A question and a quibble[edit]

"They also needed military contracts to survive ..."

The claim is being made that there is a company that had been awarded over 10,000 patents and was a "jewel in the crown of...Silicon Valley" which then employed 7,000 people at 100 plants in nine countries, and I don't doubt any of that. But to say that its founders needed military contracts otherwise they, the founders, with 7,000 employees working under them, might perish- ostensibly from malnutrition.. well, I think that might just qualify is hyperbole. I don't have much skin in the game. Its just that this article sort of reads like company promotional literature.

To wit: it doesn't have a "controversy" section at all, which is how I would describe some [controversial trout-SLAPPing] that is described here as

This book is an extraordinary, true-life account of two law-abiding gadflies who unwittingly became embroiled in the Mother of All SLAPPs and refused to be silenced by corporate corruption and judicial malfeasance. Facing financial ruin, death threats and incarceration, these stalwart Americans used the power of the Internet and the words of the World Wide Web to take on the Varian SLAPP terrorists.

I wouldn't be terribly surprised if they are employing a hyperbolic if not derogatory narrative. I know, I'm kicking a dead horse, and probably both you and I have better things to do than talk about how impoverished some millionaires or billionaires are (or were), and how the absence of anything resembling NPOV on their old company is eyebrow raising considering the "Mother of all SLAPPs" thing. Oh wait! There it is, at the end!

Maybe somebody (me if nobody volunteers) can summarize this article in a sentence or two. I don't think a summary of the case needs its own "criticism" section. Its just.. I've noticed editors of almost every article on this entire site as well as Wikiquote employ a sort of "bury the shame" tactic when it comes to things they are less proud of on the the articles that the seem to 'champion' more than 'describe'. I am probably guilty of this as well, or will be at least. The advantage of our collectivist approach, then, is that we can mutually keep each other honest. Cheers!
