Verbier.com[edit]

Jojalozzo advised me to further discuss the inclusion of verbier.com, as a link at the bottom of the Verbier page, here.

This is the message I got from Joalozzo:

"Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Verbier. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include (but are not limited to) links to personal web sites, links to web sites with which you are affiliated, and links that attract visitors to a web site or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Because Wikipedia uses the nofollow attribute value, its external links are disregarded by most search engines. If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you. Reposting promotional links is especially egregious. Verbier.com is a website that provides a complete telephone and address directory for Verbier. These directory entries are in no way ranked and are displayed alphabetically and by sector. The fact that it provides this service as well as a complete calendar of events for Verbier makes it essential further reading for anyone interested in Verbier and provides an up to date insight into the village that complements the Wikipedia entry. I do not see how this constitutes advertising or promotion as it also provides local news, information on weather/snow conditions.

The last 4 links out of the 6, however, are all businesses that appear to be profit making companies and that are not providing extra information about anything other than the event that they own. Surely this qualifies as "advertising or promotion"? I don't understand how a link to a mountain bike marathon website (grand raid) provides information about Verbier?

Could someone please further explain some of these points to me as they do not seem very clear.

From what I can tell, you are new to Wikipedia editing, are unfamiliar with editing policies, and are editing for a single purpose: to add your site to the encyclopedia. This raises the possibility that your interests may be less in furthering the project than in improving the exposure of your site. That doesn't mean your site shouldn't get that exposure but we need good reason, other than your commercial interest, to link to it.
  • Verbier.com is patently commercial, replete with advertising and promotions of commercial activity in the Verbier area.
  • The presence of other commercial links is not a reason for including one more. I think the examples for other commercial links you cite are for notable events referred to in the article.
  • Wikipedia is not a repository of links, travelog or directory. It is not intended to provide up to date information about events in Verbier. So, while your site is very likely very useful and "essential reading" for many visitors and residents, I do not consider it essential for this Wikipedia article.

Ski schools[edit]

I have often added sentences to point out that some ski schools are better than others (without giving names) and advised readers to take note of the importance of checking the quality of instructors (something that can be a matter of life and death off piste). Somehow, these posts always get deleted and the section on ski schools is little more than PR without any detailed analysis.
