early comment[edit]

I grew up in the sunland tujunga area and remember this event. I was a child at the time the slide happened, but a few years later as a teenager, my friends and I would go up to parsons trail and visit the closed cemetery because we thought it was cool. There were a lot of places where you could see empty holes in the ground where people had been buried. I don't know if this is true, but I had heard that when the hill washed out and exposed the bodies, many of them were not in coffins like they were supposed to be. The rumor had stated that the landslide uncovered (no pun intended) the fact that the funeral home would sell caskets, hold the funeral, then later unearth the body, and reclaim the casket to be resold, dropping the body back in the hole. This scandal is what closed the funeral home associated with this cemetery. Like I said, this is a story I heard growing up. I don't know if that really happened. Hopefully it can be verified.
