Football Rivalries[edit]

Should the rivalry with Maryland be added? When I was at U.Va. (early 2000s), Maryland seemed to be up there with FSU and Tech (and probably above UNC) as far as who students didn't like/wanted to beat. I think a lot of this also has to do with the mixing of U.Va. and Maryland fans in DC. Also, Maryland is now the Cavaliers' "permanent rival" in ACC scheduling. --Velvet elvis81 03:53, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Basketball?[edit]

As a current UVA student, I'd say it might be misleading to say that basketball is "immensely popular" at the U...

Historical Cavaliers versus Basketball[edit]

I believe that the wikipedia page entitled "Virginia Cavaliers" should be a reference to the actual settlers who migrated to the colonies from England, for whom the basketball team derives its name as the state of Virginia was so deeply influenced by the experience of the Cavaliers. I think that Mr. Jefferson would prefer that the Basketball team be moved to "Virginia Cavalier Basketball Team" and I have therefore moved it. Hopefully that won't be seen as vandalism... unsigned edit by User:Brockmanah (talk · contribs)

I've renamed the articles Virginia Cavaliers and Virginia Cavaliers (historical) and added standard disambiguation links to both. If you try Google on "Virginia Cavaliers" you get 1.7 million hits, of which the vast majority refer to the sports context. This is the current primary definition, and it's not useful to sideline the article to a term never used: "Virginia Cavaliers Athletics Programs" gives zero hits. I'm of the opinion that this article should be named "Virginia Athletics," with "Virginia Cavaliers" linking to a disambiguation page with links to the athletic teams and the settlers.--68.232.143.29 23:43, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Special Defense[edit]

Is there a special defense the Virginia Cavaliers deploy?--BigMac1212 (talk) 03:06, 10 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Why the deletion of the schedules?[edit]

Football season is still going. Basketball season is just starting. the page looks empty without the schedules up. Also why get rid of the fan photo?

Removal of boxing title from the count[edit]

The 1938 NCAA boxing championship is listed in the records. However, this is an unofficial title, per the NCAA itself: "Before 1948, team championships were unofficial because team points were not officially awarded." [1]

Since football titles are not recognized because they are similarly unofficial, what compelling reason is there for the boxing title to count? —C.Fred (talk) 19:16, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This comment was probably accurate in 2008, but I notice that the NCAA official records now include 1 boxing title for UVA. See http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/champs_records_book/Overall.pdf for the official breakdown. ClarkC162 (talk) 02:22, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rowing[edit]

UVA just won the NCAA rowing national title last night. Someone with wiki skills please add to our championships —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.33.92.62 (talk) 15:13, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

At last check, it had been added. —C.Fred (talk) 16:45, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Consistent Infobox Usage[edit]

The list of school championships that is currently in the "infobox" should be moved out. For consistency with all other ACC schools and other NCAA schools around the country, the information should be migrated into the "College Athletics" template. If there are no objections, I will sandbox this and try to manage the wealth of information already in that right-side column and retain it all within the article itself. proposed name change[edit]

what about mention of the proposals to cahnge cavalier to wahoos some years back. it was in the cav daily.(Lihaas (talk) 05:13, 9 January 2011 (UTC)).[reply]

This is an excellent question, along with the implied question of "How was the UVA Cavalier name first established, given the historical basis that is ostensibly at odds with the concepts that Jefferson founded the university with"? Skyemoor (talk) 13:13, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
