Who should be included? - Thomas Hart Benton[edit]

Just wondering. He attended the SAIC very briefly, from 1907 to 1909, then split for Paris. It's barely a Chicago connection at all, although the SAIC claims him as an alumn. On the other hand, I note Georgia O'Keeffe is included here, and she spent even less time at the SAIC, from 1905-1906.Artemis-Arethusa (talk) 00:23, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Is it a "Diaspora" if they're not from Chicago?[edit]

While I'm about it, I have some issue with the section titled "Chicago Artists Internationally", which lists a "diaspora" of artists. But several of the artists listed there are not from Chicago, only came there briefly as students, and then moved on. Claes Oldenburg is Swedish, for goodness sake. Georgia O'Keeffe spent less than a year here as a student. There's no mention on Robert Indiana's page of his living any closer to Chicago than Indiana. We may consider them a loss to Chicago's art culture, but it seems less of a diaspora than an inability on Chicago's part to encourage them to stay. I also question the purpose of the 'Chicago artists internationally' section. The overall outline of this article seems flawed. As a reader of this page, I'd like to know about the major contributors to Visual arts of Chicago and by artistic form (painter vs. sculptor vs. photography), but it feels like there's a mix of decade-focused writing along with the style of the section 'Chicago artists internationally'. This section does not explain how, where, why these artists are notable outside Chicago. --E bailey (talk) 17:30, 29 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Section on Graffiti?[edit]

Should there be a section on Street Art or Graffiti in Chicago? There is a growing category in the commons about it. --Jasenlee (talk) 23:19, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Structure and purpose of this page and no mention of Architecture?[edit]

The structure of this page seems flawed. As a reader of this page, I'd like to know about the major contributors to Visual arts of Chicago and by artistic form (painter vs. sculptor vs. photography). Also, there's no mention of Architecture! Which is one of Chicago's major artistic expressions. Visual arts certainly include architecture. There is an article dedicated to Architecture of Chicago. Perhaps this article should refer to that one and only include a brief summary. The section on 'Chicago artists internationally' seems to give too much focus on contributions outside Chicago, whereas this article should be focused on works that appear in Chicago or originally came from Chicago.

I'd like to see the article structured more like, but am open to other ideas:

  1. Major contributors to Chicago visual arts
    1. Architecture
    2. Painting
    3. Sculpture
    4. Photography
    5. Illustration, printmaking
  2. By decade
    1. 1940s
    2. 1950s
    3. ... and so on...
