In 2006 a low-mileage VW Taro (LN105) with a modified load bed to enable a 2000-kilometre range led an expedition with three Toyotas across the Sahara's Majabat al Koubra ('Sahara Empty Quarter') but succumbed to crankshaft failure around the halfway point after crossing Mauritania's Ourane Sand Sea.
