Migrating Vovinam <-> Viet Vo Dao[edit]

As to the information I gained from talking to some Vovinam Masters Vovinam and Viet Vo Dao are NOT interchangable terms. The complete description actually is "Vovinam Viet Vo Dao". Vovinam is simply "Martial Art from Vietnam" ( Vo = MArtial Art, Vinam -> Vietnam ) Viet Vo Dao is the philosophy behind it. Dao = "the way" => The vietnamese way of learning / doing martial art

As I wrote the german article on Vovinam I am willing to merge that article into the englisch article and the merge the german and english articles on Vovinam and Viet Vo Dao. Thomas

Black Belt[edit]

An anonymous user added the following: "This rank is equal to Tae Kwon Do's black belt. A person who wears a yellow belt with one or more stripes are considered assistant masters."

This suggest that black belts can be compared across martial arts styles.
Is a black in Kyushinkai Karate is as good as a black belt in Tae Kwon Do or vice versa ?
In some martial art styles it surely is easyer, in some it is harder to achive a black belt.
And a black belt in one style has learnt different things than a black belt in other styles.

Opinions anyone ???

My personal opinion is that in each martial article a mention of how long it typically takes to obtain the belt should be mentioned. That's the most "neutral" way of determining "rank" across systems: number of years typical to achieve yellow, black, whatever. C-Blade (talk) 07:55, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Missing References[edit]

When I rewrote this article I used allmost no linkable sources. I talked to various masters and instructors of the school I learn Vovinam at and of other Vovinam schools. I don't have any written documents I can link. So how do I reference my sources ?

Books (with the isbn linked) or newspaper articles (including date & page) would be good, the internal details don't need that much support at this stage, (getting it to good or featured article stage is an other matter) Something about history would be good, I've added {{Fact}}tags where you might want to include something. Lack of documentation can be a problem with some things, but unless there are huge claims (instructor was special forces hereo.... etc) then it's unlikely anything will be removed. --Nate1481(^t/_c) 13:53, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted PROD[edit]

Hi—this article was PRODed by User:Mdtemp with reason "non-notable martial art"; I've reverted the PROD. I agree that the article is sorely lacking in secondary sources and parts of it read like a promotional brochure, but even the cursory research I've done on the topic make it clear to me that Vovinam is historically significant and seems to have a considerable circle of practice both within Vietnam and abroad.
