Off the air?[edit]

I finally got someone to respond to my queries--I talked to someone from IonMedia. The following is an approximation of what he told me.

In March, 2018, the Philadelphia station carrying ION TV (i.e., WPPX) moved to a new transmitting location with a new transmitter with apparently a lot less power. (Presumably this was part of the switch from transmitting on real channel 31 to real channel 34.) (The move was about 1 mile.)

I'm not clear on why they reduced power, but I got the sense it was forced on them (by the FCC?).

The person I talked to came back later (via email) to say that the signal would be very weak and I would be unlikely to receive it even if I raised my antenna. This correlates with TVFool.com--I generated a report for a 100' antenna at my house and WPPX does not show up on the list.

Incidentally, they apparently also moved the New York transmitter, also by about a mile (iiuc). Currently, iiuc, they both transmit on real channel 34. Initially the person I talked to thought the problem might be co-channel interference / rejection, but, as I mentioned above, he came back a little later and said it was more likely just a weak signal problem.

Original report / query / problem[edit]

Starting maybe a month ago, I stopped receiving WPPX via my OTA antenna. Unlike some other stations that might be weak, it does not fade in or out, it is just plain gone. I saw the note that says it might switch to real channel 34, so I tried receiving / scanning for it there--nothing, just snow. (When I am trying to receive a marginal channel, that might fade in and out, I typically see a black background and a box on the TV that says "No Signal".)

So, three points or questions:

  * Where can I get definitive information as to whether the station has gone off the air? The FCC website still seems to show them transmitting over the air with a 200Kw transmitter.  TV Fool no longer shows them in the list of stations that I might receive, even if I'd need something like a 500' antenna (in other words, even stations with very low signal strength which I might not reasonably receive), but I tried searching the Forums and there doesn't seem to be any report of them going off the air (or switching to a much lower power transmitter).

  * <darn--getting old is a pain>

  * If the station has gone off the air, it should be noted in this article.
