Private Use Area symbols need images[edit]

The page has many characters in the Unicode Private Use Area ranges. There's no guarantee that a reader will be able to see these glyphs, and in fact there's no way to even find out what they are. They should be replaced with images.

For example, in the Consonants chart, the velar lateral cell contains the glyph , which, if you zoom in enough to read the 3x5-bit characters, means "unknown character U+F268". Search for that code on the Code Chart page and you'll get

The character U+F268 is in one of the Private Use Areas (PUA).

The interpretations of such characters are not specified in the Unicode Standard and their use may be determined by private agreement among cooperating users.

The corresponding code chart page says at the top

Range: E000-F8FF

The Private Use Area does not contain any character assignments, consequently no character code charts or names lists are provided for this area.

The same is true of the many similar glyphs in the bottom two rows of Consonantal Allophones. These all seem to be either F269 or F268.

A web search for F268 turns up what appears to be a promising site, U+F2B8 Font Support - FileFormat.Info:

but none of the displayed images are relevant. Another hit, (U+F2B8) UTF-8 character | UTF-8 Icons, is similarly unhelpful.

Since apparently only two different codepoints are involved, uploading and using two images should solve the problem.

@Thnidu:: Looking on the copy in Google books of the book, it seems that the velar lateral phoneme is a lateral fricative, that might be represented in IPA [ʟ̝] or [ʟ̝̊]. For this, at least, probably one of those characters could be used instead of images (Phillips uses nonstandard/Americanist notation). Auvon (talk) 21:03, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
