Assessment[edit]

As requested at WP:WikiProject Germany, two points for future improvements:

  • The article has a few remaining gaps in sourcing, most notably the first para of "Diplomatic career (1950–1957)", fourth and sixth para of "Empty Chair Crisis", and the lists of complaints and differences in "Issues behind confrontation with de Gaulle"
  • The article contains many observations about Hallstein's personal opinions, plans and intentions. "Hallstein favored", "Hallstein saw" and similar phrases. Such statements are sourced and give some valuable background insight, but their sheer number affects the article's tone. The article is not biased per se, but more of its content should be presented from a 3rd person's point of view. Where "subjective" thoughts or emotions are needed for context, they should be included as full quotes from a reliable, independent source to avoid any risk of misinterpretation.

Aside from those concerns, the article contains a lot of valuable, interesting and comprehensive information, and is clearly written with a logical structure. GermanJoe (talk) 16:49, 10 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I have added some references. I have also fixed the page numbers for one of the chapters: I had originally used the German original; when I obtained and used the English translation, I changed the page numbers accordingly, but missed some. My use of words like "saw", "favoured", etc. was misleading; in most cases, I think, these were not subjective thoughts and emotions but things Hallstein had written or said, for instance in his numerous speeches, as summarized by secondary sources. This should mainly be in the sections on Hallstein's "vision" of Europe and on his differences of opinion with Erhard and De Gaulle. I have now used more appropriate words such as "advocated" etc. I will continue to have a look at this problem. --Boson (talk) 21:06, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Not really necessary for B, but: 1) ref #15 "German Historical Museum." doesn't point to any long bibliographic entry (or maybe I don't see it). 2) ref #134 points to Hallstein 1971, should that be 1972? No 1971 book from him in bibliography. 3) A lot of biblio entries are not used as sources and should be moved to "further reading", if interesting for readers. Install User:Ucucha/HarvErrors.js to see them (or I can move them). GermanJoe (talk) 15:33, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again! I thought I had fixed the problem with the German Historical Museum once, but I think someone has been fiddling with the citation templates. Seems to be a problem with putting the name in quotation marks (I vaguely recall adding them in an attempt to fix a previous problem). I am looking at the other problems. --Boson (talk) 21:06, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Useful gadget! The references should be OK now. --Boson (talk) 22:10, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

End of tenure at European Commission[edit]

The article states that Hallstein's tenure at the Commission ended in late 1967, when we was "aged 68". Given his birth year (1901), the age cannot be true. It would also be good to clarify why the given end of tenure differs from his official end of term in June 1967, see https://www.europarl.europa.eu/thinktank/en/document.html?reference=EPRS_BRI(2019)637982. --CRau080 (talk) 15:50, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Membership in nazi organisations[edit]

The article states that "Hallstein was a member of several nominally Nazi professional organizations", and the note mentions:

  • the National Socialist Teachers League (Nationalsozialistischer Lehrerbund),
  • the National Socialist Association of Legal Professionals (NS-Rechtswahrerbund)
  • the National Socialist People's Welfare organization (Nationalsozialistische Volkswohlfahrt)
  • the National Socialist German Lecturers League (Nationalsozialistischer Deutscher Dozentenbund)
  • the National Socialist Air-Raid Protection Association (Nationalsozialistischer Luftschutzbund).

Two of them are not professional organizations (People's Welfare organization and Air-Raid Protection Association) and the Lecturers League at least had eligibility conditions. An applicant had to either have been a member of the NSDAP before 30 January 1933 or be vouched for by "two proved national-socialists" (zweier bewährter Nationalsozialisten) (see pages 2 and 3 of the linked facsimile). Furthermore, the Wikipedia article about the Lecturers League states that by 1938, one quarter only of the German lecturers were members.

In my opinion, the qualifiers "professional" and "nominally" should be removed. The contents of the note could perhaps be placed in the main article. --Orationes (talk) 20:58, 27 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Conflicting statements about views on Nazism[edit]

These statements: "Hallstein was initially a fervent nazist" "He is reputed to have rejected Nazi ideology and to have kept his distance from the Nazis" Seem contradictory to me. I know next to nothing about the man so I cannot comment either way. Considering that the first one is not sourced it should be looked into, and if one is found a sentence should be added somewhere explaining that it is a matter of debate. 83.213.227.105 (talk) 18:21, 11 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

There is no way that he could have been in his various positions and not be a supporter of the Nazis. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.240.254.28 (talk) 18:48, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
