How wide-spread is this?[edit]

I have seen (rare) examples of this. Most commonly at Hackerspaces or hacker cons (internationally). It has sort of become an in-joke among hackers of the war-driving generation. In the early through mid aughts I saw a few libraries (US Mid-Atlantic) use it to advertise their WiFi network to patrons. Maybe once I saw it at a cafe (Washington DC). In all these cases, the symbols were written with parenthesis (either ")( essid" or "() essid key"). I'd have to dig through old photos to find a good example.
