Oldney?[edit]

Until I changed it to Olney, the article had a sentence that read It formed part of the parish of Oldney until 1866. I assume that this was a typo for Olney, but can anyone confirm? --Concrete Cowboy 13:12, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I believe it was an archaic name for Olney: might be worth setting up a redirect. -- Roleplayer 17:45, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've just had a brainwave and checked Vision of Britain. It has an Oldney in Sutherland, but nowhere else. Its record for Warrington doesn't list it. Its historical description of Olney gives Oulney as an archaic name, but no Oldney. I think that just about wraps it up for Oldney. --Concrete Cowboy 18:01, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I also just had a brainwave and checked the Oxford Dictionary of Placenames (ed. A.D. Mills and Adrian Room, 2002, Oxford University Press) and it gives the following definition:
Olney Bucks. Ollanege 979, Olnei 1086 (DB). 'Island, or dry ground in marsh, of a man called Olla'. OE pers. name (genitive -n) + ēg.
Worth including in the article? -- Roleplayer 23:23, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I've just looked at the Olney page, and that says it was first mentioned in the DB of 1086, though the reference above gives an earlier date - I wonder what they're referring to? -- Roleplayer 23:25, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
