This page should be renamed Water column[edit]

It is absurd to have different pages for lakes and oceans. scientists relate to the concept of water column in any type of water body. Just look at the incoming links to the disambig page! Even Brittanica has figured this one out. Anlace 04:20, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The different zones[edit]

Apparently these are defined by different depth ranges. This is not really related to physical or biogeochemical fields or processes, hence not always useful. In most oceanographic research (including my own) we rather use terms like «(eu)photic zone»—typically defined as where light penetration is at least 1%^[1]—, «mixed layer» and «compensation depth». The first term means literally the same as «epipelagic zone», but whereas the epipelagic layer is 200 m thick (by definition), the euphotic layer varies usually from metres to maybe 300 m.
