Data Collection[edit]

POV wording[edit]

It's interesting to compare this article's wording with that of Water supply and sanitation in Peru. Despite the fact that Venezuela's stats are much better than Peru's (and improving yearly), it is described as having "uneven progress" and "insufficient coverage and service quality, despite the country's oil wealth" in the very first sentence. Meanwhile, the first thing said about Peru (again, with worse stats) is that it has "made important advances in the last two decades" (despite the fact that this is true in almost every country, including Venezuela). And who added the "despite the country's oil wealth" (without a source, it sounds like POV and OR to me)?

You have a point here concerning wording in both articles, which could be more balanced and which I will review. But your statement about improvements in Venezuela so far is not backed up by figures. Please consider the document by the CAF Water Report listed under the sources for the article, Table 8, p. 11. It shows that water and sanitation coverage in Venezuela increased only very slowly in the period 1990-2001. There may or may not have been mroe of an increase since 2001, but you would have to show figures to prove it. While Venezuela has higher coverage figures than Peru, the rate of increase has been much lower than in Peru in the period indicated. Venezuela's oil wealth is an undisputed fact, which probably does not require a source. Again, if you have figures documenting recent increases of coverage in Venezuela, please add them to the article.--Mschiffler 01:25, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Mschiffler. Thanks for your prompt reply. I searched for newer (post-2001) sanitation and public health stats several months ago. Regarding water/sanitation, I came up empty-handed. If pre-2001 trends are all that we have access to, then we must make that clear (which you do, later on in the article). In the lead, it is okay to state that water/sanitation worsened, but since the data are several years out of date, we must make the time period explicit (something like "in the period 1990-2001, Venezuela's water/sanitation situation dramatically worsened" according to what the data state. I just looked at the report again, and indeed there was a slight increase in the 1990-2001 period. I also checked the website of the Venezuelan Statistical Institute, but the website was inaccessible right now. I will revise the wording as you suggest and let's see if someone comes up with better data. Also, I checked the Peru lead section and it does mention how dismal the state of access and service quality still is.--Mschiffler 01:43, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I tried the INE site too; all the subpages are down as well.

There are still POV discrepancies in phrasing and sentence order between the two articles. You are correct in stating that Peru's problems are mentioned in the lead, but that's not done until the last half. Meanwhile, Venezuela's issues (serious as they may be) are front-loaded and given center-stage in the lead. If I come across significantly newer data, I intend to return and rewrite the lead. Thanks. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
