Cranberries

A small concern, regarding the factuality of the contention that Wellfleet is known for cranberries as well as oysters; Wellfleet has only one cranberry bog, and that is almost in Eastham (to the south). The great bulk of cape cod cranberries are grown in bogs in the Mid and Upper cape (which is intuitively south of, but higher in elevation than the Lower Cape, of which Chatham, Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro, and Provincetown are a part.) Just a small point, in an otherwise accurate and informative artical, but important just the same.

Reference Issue

I have edited and added to the article to bring it in line with the rest of the articles for the state. I have attempted to remove anything which could not be referenced through either source used (the town's website and a historical profile located in the Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket Street Atlas). If you can find the references for the two major points left out (the cranberries, and the failure of the oyster harvest in the 1800s), please put them in with the references listed.

Also, for further reference on the town name issue, the website lists the oyster reference and the atlas lists the "Whale Fleet" reference. ToddC4176 23:28, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Geography

It is common, and not incorrect, to cite the Census Bureau as a source. The Census Bureau publishes such data, though the measurements may indeed have been carried out by NGS or its predecessor. Hertz1888 (talk) 15:18, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Champlain, "port aux huistres"

Hello all- After copyediting a sentence about Champlain having dubbed what is now Wellfleet Harbor the "port aux huistres", I looked for sources to support the assertion and found that it appears to be incorrect. Champlain's account refers to Barnstable Harbor, not Wellfleet Harbor, as the port aux Huistres. See original account in French and modern English translation (1907); note the footnotes. Wellfleet's Tower Clock, Oyster Relevance to Wellfleet

I have just added in two facts about Wellfleet: one about Wellfleet's Tower Clock and how it is the only tower clock in the world which runs on ship's time, and another fact about oysters and their history and relevance to Wellfleet. Hi- I was just about to leave a message on your talkpage when I saw this post. Just wanted to let you know why I reverted the oystering history bit: SPAT is a good local organization, but their website isn't the best source for the history you were discussing. The oyster population in Wellfleet was depleted, almost completely, I believe, by sometime in the 1800s. As I understand it, the beds were replenished with oysters brought up from Chesapeake Bay by coastal schooner. That would be an interesting bit to find a source for and mention. I have an ancient paper somewhere that I might be able to dig up if you like. Eric ^talk 14:40, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
