With all the culture and history of the West Village, this is all Wikipedia has on it? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.38.196.212 (talkcontribs).

I agree. The crime and retail information belongs in a newsletter, not an encyclopedia. This entry should expand its discussions of more timeless remarkable features of the neighborhood, including but not limited to major historical events (e.g. Stonewall Riots) and contributions to culture (many great artists and authors made masterpieces here).Doctorrobert (talk) 01:41, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Part of the problem here is the artificial bifurcation of "Greenwich Village" and "West Village" about which more below. Before the term "West Village" came into vogue, all of the legendary events and accomplishments associated with the neighborhood were (correctly) understood to have happened within the bounds of "Greenwich Village". Now with this artificial division (created by real-estate agents) there is natural confusion. Not sure what the ideal solution is, since the new term has gained wide currency. Question[edit]

Can someone tell me why the West Village does not start at 5th avenue and continue until the Hudson River? Fifth Ave, after all, is the division between East and West Manhattan in this area. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.36.87.4 (talk) 22:54, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fifth Avenue terminates at Washington Square Park, and much of the Village is south of it. However, it is correct that the boundaries are vague. ScottyBerg (talk) 20:51, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The boundaries are vague partly because they are an invention of real-estate agents in the 1960s and 1970s. Having christened part of the Lower East Side the "East Village" in hopes of increasing its real-estate valuations, it seemed natural to many that Greenwich Village to the west should therefore become the "West Village"--a moniker which, this article to the contrary, actually has absolutely no historical basis. What people now call the "West Village" accurately describes the original Greenwich Village and nothing else. This article is in terrible shape. The ridiculous level of detail about recent crime and retail openings/closing has got to go per WP:NOTSTATSBOOK #3. Toddst1 (talk) 00:02, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

West Village not a sub-neighborhood of Greenwich Village?[edit]

This article describes the West Village as being a neighborhood that is distinct from Greenwich Village whereas the Greenwich Village article describes its boundaries as extending west to the Hudson River, which would make the West Village a neighborhood within Greenwich Village (which is what I have always believed). Both articles cannot be right.Raaronson (talk) 12:31, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned references in West Village[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of West Village's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "StonewallNationalMonument1":

  • From Greenwich Village: Eli Rosenberg (June 24, 2016). "Stonewall Inn Named National Monument, a First for the Gay Rights Movement". The New York Times. Retrieved June 25, 2016.
  • From Christopher Street: Eli Rosenberg (June 24, 2016). "Stonewall Inn Named National Monument, a First for the Gay Rights Movement". The New York Times. Retrieved June 25, 2016.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 02:15, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
