Photo date[edit]

This article has two images of WV Independence Hall, in a then-and-now arrangement (which is really cool!). The caption on the "then" image gave the photo date as 1858. However, the image itself has a label at the bottom stating "Postoffice, Wheeling, W.Va." The problem is that West Virginia did not exist yet in 1858. So either:

  • The 1858 date is incorrect, and the photo was actually taken at least a few years later, or
  • The label on the photo was applied later to a photo actually taken in 1858.

Can anyone provide some clarification on this? Meanwhile, because of the apparent contradiction here, I have removed "1858" from the image caption and replaced it with the broader "19th century". -Ipoellet 17:18, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Building modifications[edit]

Also, what happened to the round, turret-like structure on the right-had side of the 19th century photo? It's gone in the 2006 photo. -Ipoellet 17:21, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

According to the National Register nomination, it was added about 1890, and housed a stairwell and elevator. It was removed during the 1980s restoration of the Civil War-era appearance. Magic♪piano 14:09, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
