North America vs. Japan

Any word on why North America gets the better end of the deal this time around, what with an earlier release date and Wii Sports packaged with the console? Gordon P. Hemsley 04:38, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Don't worry, Japan gets the system at a cheaper price (since they aren't forced to buy Wii Sports like the rest of us have to). They also get all the accessories and Virtual Console games at cheaper prices. This isn't a messageboard though. TJ Spyke 04:48, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
I'm aware that this "isn't a messageboard". It's a place to discuss the content of the article. And I haven't seen any mention of why the Wii is going to be released in North America before it is released in Japan, on Wikipedia or otherwise. Seeing as how this is a break in (logical) tradition, it seems noteworthy enough to mention in the article. The fact that Wii Sports comes pre-packaged with the system in all places but Japan is curious, too. Gordon P. Hemsley 05:09, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
Do you have some article somewhere that mentions why Nintendo did this? If so, bring it forward and be bold in editing the article. I haven't seen any reason, although it would be a nice addition, possibly one sentence in the introduction.--Farquaadhnchmn(Dungeon) 00:59, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
That's what I'm saying. I haven't seen any article citing a reason. But I'm not actively looking for one. I figured you guys, who regularly edit this article, may have found something. Gordon P. Hemsley 01:20, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
The reason for the delay was because Japan's holiday shopping season starts later than in the Americas. Thus, Nintendo decided to push back Japan's release date. (I'm still looking for the article which gives this reason, will get back to y'all as soon as possible.) fmmarianicolon | Talk 02:36, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
Here is a link to the article mentioning the reason: http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/fun.games/11/19/nintendo.wii.ap/index.html?eref=rss_topstories . I'd edit it in, but I'm not sure how to reference a CNN webpage that used an Associated Press story. fmmarianicolon | Talk 02:59, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

"Popular culture" section

So, what's the consensus on this section? Should it be added or not? Just64helpin 22:30, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Considering it only contained one item, I don't think it contributed much to the article. As a matter of fact, I'm not sure pop culture sections ever add any value to an article. --Lethargy 22:35, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Tense changes

Is there any organized plan for the changing of future tense in regards to the article's subject? Many changes will have to be made to the article once the console is released. Just64helpin 17:41, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

I have created a page here, with pages that will be affected by the Wii launch (in more than tense perhaps as well). I think it would be a good idea to organize something where each person gets, say, 3 or 4 articles to edit (depending on the number of participants) so that we can have up-to-date info within two hours or so. S/he's talking about when Wii is released. Reread Scepia's comments. — Jaxad0127 04:43, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

It's he. And yes Jaxad0127 is absolutely right when he says I'm waiting for the Wii's launch. I have a Wii on preorder, and I will pick it up on Day 1 to provide you with the latest VC news, Linktriforce007 style. Linktriforce007 21:22, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Simply looking at the VC list on the console is original research. You have to cite other sources and their lists, not your own experience. -- Consumed Crustacean (talk) 20:24, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

Launch titles

You guys are in late. There are 29 confirmed launch titles, and Wii Play isn't one of them... go have a look at IGN's Wii Launch Guide 70.80.67.160 23:34, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Um, you are wrong. There are 20 launch games, with 13 more games coming out after launch and before the end of the year. IGN has been wrong many times, including now. Nintendo released a PR statement today with the games that will be out at launch. As for Wii Play, if you check you will see it's listed as a launch title in Europe/Japan/Australia where it IS coming out for launch. TJ Spyke 23:44, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

"References" cleanup

The "references" section is quite long and contains many redundant or similar links. Some consolidation is required to reduce its size. Just64helpin 01:51, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

For those unfamiliar with how to do this, see Wikipedia:Footnotes#Citing a footnote more than once. --Lethargy 02:00, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Future enhancements

Mausy5043 10:40, 16 November 2006 (UTC) : Nintendo has already announced (by way of Sonic) that they will be installing DVD functionality in the next version of the Wii. I expect more announcements to come. Is it possible to add a chapter for grouping of the announced upgrades to the current hardware incursion?

This is only confirmed for Japan. There is no definte word on the North American region yet.

Nunchuck, Classic Controllers

Anyone think that it'd be worthwhile having something about the nunchuck controller on the main page or perhaps on its own new page? It and the classic controller appear to have been left off the main descriptions. BigHairRef | Talk 15:08, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

In fact, the article has no explanation whatsoever of what the 'classic' controller is. --InShaneee 20:39, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
There is a link to the Wii Remote page, which goes into lots of detail. Also, it's spelled "nunchuk". I wouldn't be opposed to a small description of the Nunchuk and Classic Controller on the Wii page. TJ Spyke 20:42, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
Someone who can edit fancy putting them in then? I reckon some pics to go along with the wiimote wouldn't go amiss either. BigHairRef | Talk 01:20, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

Interestingly (assuming these are the EU boxes as well) this is the first time I've seen any Nintendo consumables displayed in what they're sold in (a la sony PS2 controllers and memory cards) rather than just having the picture of them on the box. Letting people touch what they'll be using, possibly something of a marketing tool to get more people to buy. Perhaps my inner conspiracy theorist is going ott a bit. Miyamoto: Wii supposed to be a sub-$100 console

"My idea was to spend nothing on the console technology so all the money could be spent on improving the interface and software. If we hadn't used NAND flash memory [to store data such as games and photos] and other pricey parts, we might have succeeded." Citation needed in Colombian price

The article says that the Wii will cost 1.100.000 colombian pesos, but then it says "Citation needed" I am from Colombia and I have sources that confirm the colombian price, as you can see in this online store http://www.fotojapon.com/especifico.aspx?id=34970 I don't know how to eliminate the citation needed and if someone can add this as source, I will very thankfully - Palpo

keyboard and mouse

will the wii support a usb keyboard and mouse for browsing the internet?

They've not said anything about it and the manual doesn't mention anything so probably not. That said nobody has tried just plugging in a generic keyboard and mouse yet, so you never know. I reckon if it does happen it'll appear with a firmware update, and perhaps some official keyboard/mouse. Sockatume 16:23, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
I tried plugging in a mouse. It didn't do anything. Hopefully they'll let at least a keyboard for the internet channel. Mouse would be nice too for the world wide web. By the way, I also tried plugging in my memory card reader to see if I could use my sony memory s tick with it (my SD card is in my cell phone and my cell phone is missing). North American release

The article says 4 million by the end of the year. Does anyone know how many in the U.S. for the launch? 72.187.97.84 16:34, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

"The majority" of the first 2m unit shipment is going to the US, apparently. So that's at least 1m. Japan's getting 400k so that leaves at most 600k to be distributed between Europe and Canada. It's reasonable to assume a similar distribution of units for the rest of the year. Sockatume 16:45, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
I've heard around 1 million for U.S. launch also Tuesday42 16:50, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
It's 1 million for North America on launch day. 4 million worldwide by the endo of the year with about 2 million of those to North America. TJ Spyke 19:03, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

RGB output

It's pretty obvious from Nintendo's shipping of first-party RGB SCART cables that the Wii supports RGB SCART output, and it's stated as such in Nintendo's official magazine here in the UK, however my note to that effect was removed (along with some other technical detail) in this edit. Care to justify? Sockatume 17:27, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Ye olde tech specs

Yeah, the IGN numbers about the Wii's number crunching capability. Regardless of the fact that they are totally unofficial and Nintendo probably won't ever comment on them, they are nonetheless being published in print (e.g., PC Magazine) as the "official" numbers. So do we mention it? The official standard is verifiability not truth, and these numbers are certainly verifiable from sources both online and in print even if they're not true. --Stratadrake 23:44, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

There are pics of a disassembled Wii circulating already. It shouldn't be too difficult to track them down and get information on them based on the part numbers.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.6.0.159 (talkcontribs)
Links please.. And should we include a 'wii unscrewed' video in the external links when one becomes available (as it inevitable will).?
People at PopSci have already disassembled it and taken photos (see section below). The graphics chip is bigger than the CPU, but the code numbers aren't exactly exoteric. In reference to the tech specs, PopSci describes the Wii as "75% slower than the 360"[2], in other words, just under 50% the number crunching power. Whether that's based on the IGN numbers or not, I dunno. --Stratadrake 19:28, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

670,000 or so units sold

While nexgenwars.com is an awful unreliable site, TGDaily is one. The fact that they are publishing the numbers give reliability to the source, even if they consider it unreliable still. We have had this discussion with VGCharts in the best selling article. In other words, it is correct to add a link to tgdaily.com for the approximate sold numbers, but it is not to add a link to nexgenwars.com, even if both have the same information or even if tgdaily.com has a link to nexgenwars.com -- ReyBrujo 05:08, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

The TGDaily article even says "At least if we believe NexGen wars", which means they are not saying that NexGenWars is right and they are just saying what that site says. It's the same way sites like GameSpot and IGN sometimes report rumors posted by other sites. TJ Spyke 05:19, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
Yes, and they are publishing it, thus backing the article up (even if they don't back their source). Wikipedia:Verifiability states that our threshold is verifiability, not truth. Do we have a reliable source? Yes, TGDaily certainly is. Can we verify the information? Yes, the link is there, they give the number and even the source. Do we believe nexgenwars.com? No. But the fact that they (TGD) is backing the article up (it is in their site) is enough for us. It is just the same with all those analysts speculation that are usually pretty off. In this case, nexgenwars.com could be a pretty awful place ran by a 13 year old Flash programmer, but we are not including the unreliable source, we are including the reliable one. This is a common mistake we do at Wikipedia: analyze the article, and wonder whether the sources the site used to create are reliable or not. We are not required to determine if nexgenwars.com is a reliable site. We are required to see if TGD is one. And since it is, we can include the information. -- ReyBrujo 05:30, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
Is TGDaily a reliable source either? To be honest, i've never heard of them before today and i've never seen them mentioned anywhere. TJ Spyke 05:35, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
It is part of Tom's Hardware Guide network, and one of the 10,000 most visited sites in Internet. However, I will give you the fact that it is pretty hard to find other sites that had quoted them, as most quote Tom's Hardware site directly. I remember it appeared in Next Generation (I discovered it that way), but may have to dig some in order to get more references... since it is already too late, I will leave this option for people wanting to add the information in the article: prove TGD notability to include that link :-) -- ReyBrujo 05:47, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
It's way too early to have any North American launch figures for the Wii or the PS3, NPD releases that data a month after the launches. The only way I could see that we should add North American launch figures before NPD's data gets released is if Nintendo or Sony themselves make a press release that they have sold such and such units at launch. Anything other than that is just conjecture. Dionyseus 05:51, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Gamecube controller

hello there, is the gamecube controller compatible with the Wii? because i will certenly not like using the Wii remote. i hope the answer is yes because i am really excited about getting my hands on the Wii! also will it play ALL gamecube games? Touth 04:28, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Yes the Wii will play all GameCube games. Why get the Wii if you don't want to use the Wii Remote? The only games confirmed to let you use GC controllers are Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2. Some others let you use the Classic Controller (like The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy), but almost every games uses just the Wii Remote. TJ Spyke 04:33, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

TJ Spyke, the reason why i will not like the Wii remote is because you have to stand up and wave your arms about. i will start to look like a TOTAL LOON! also my parents will say WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU DOING? WHY ARE YOU FLAPPING YOUR ARMS ABOUT? you see? i be better off just using a controller. by the way, what do you mean the only games cofirmed to let you you (why did you put the word you twice?) GC games are Super Smash bros. Brawl and the other game? those two games are Wii games not gamecube games! did you mean those two games are the ONLY games that are compatible with the gamecube controller for the Wii? Touth 05:05, 7 November 2006 (UTC) phew... that is one LONG comment! hehe

Really, you don't think you look somewhat dorky playing video games in the first place? In any case, the whole point of the Wii really is the motion sensitive controller; why not just buy a gamecube if you want to play gamecube games? Those two that TJ Spyke gave were indeed the only confirmed Wii games to support the GCN controller. All Gamecube games should work (though again, a Gamecube is at least $150 less than a Wii). -- Consumed Crustacean (talk) 05:15, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

i already have a gamecube but i just dont hardly play on it any more. well i WILL play on it when Zelda: Twilight Princess comes out! i am CERTENLY gonna buy that game. anyway i am not just intrested about playing gamecube games on the Wii i am also intrested in some of the Wii games like super smash bros. brawl,( THAT...GAME...LOOKS...AWSOME...DUDE!) and super mario galaxy. its just this Wii remote thats spoling it for me. Touth 05:43, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

I think you'll give the Wii remote a second chance with Wii Sports. I also think when your mom says "What on Earth are you doing!?", you can reply "having fun. You should try it" and hand her a remote. The Wii is designed with adults in mind. too! —Shanesan (contribs) (Talk) 05:45, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
Chances are Super Mario Galaxy won't work without the Wiimote. Smash Bros. might be the only good game to do so. -- Consumed Crustacean (talk) 05:50, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
You also don't have to stand up and flail like a loon, you can actually just flick your wrists to controll everything. Pick up a TV remote and move it a little with your wrist, that is all you really have to do to control games. All that other stuff is extra and if you really want to get into it (like how some people already flail a normal controller even though it doesn't do anything). Besides, i'm sure you will like it once you try it out. TJ Spyke 05:58, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

at least i have super smash bros. brawl that is compatible with the gamecube controller. i am happy to hear about that! also is Metroid Prime 3: corruption compatible with the gamecube controller too? (shame that super mario galaxy is not compatible. oh well) by the way, i would like to thank you guys for helping me out. many thanks! your the best! Touth 06:19, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

No, MP3 uses the Wii Remote and Nunchuk (check out some of the videos to see how great it works). TJ Spyke 06:25, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

TJ spyke, what do you mean Nunchuk? is that just a little joke or a silly word you made up? LOl hehe Touth 06:39, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Nunchuk is the official name for the attachment to the Wii-mote that has an analog stick. Check out Wii Remote. Scepia 06:42, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
Touth, I reccomend you read the Wii Remote page for detailed information on the Nunchuk. Also, I reccomend Wii.com with the Wii Experience videos. They show you the general concensus of how people new to the Wii play with the remote. —Shanesan (contribs) (Talk) 06:43, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
Keep in mind, probably 95% of games or more will just use the Wii-mote, not the GCN controller. No reason to get Wii if you won't use the control scheme. Scepia 06:44, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
By the way, you don't have to stand up, and you don't have to wave your arms about. 217.206.142.69 11:10, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
That's already been said... -SaturnYoshi THE VOICES 08:53, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Wow this is hilarious. I'm guessing someone here isn't a DDR fan either, hehe. I have had the same conversation with a few of my hardcore pc-only gamer friends. They say things like, "Man, I just can't stand playing a FPS without a mouse! Thumb sticks are lame!" All Nintendo did was expand the way people interact with the game. Also, I doubt it will happen, but I wouldn't be surprised if they released the Powerglove 2 or some wearable alternative to the nunchuck. --Trakon 09:23, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
