Image for Info Box[edit]

I just created this article. I found an image in the Commons that I thought looked really good for the Info Box even though it's not the actual cover of the book. The actual book covers are rather bland, just showing a hotel, I actually think the image I found in the Commons is a better image for giving the main idea of what the book is about: the wild life of a town essentially built completely around a bunch of oil wells. But in the Teahouse the suggestion I got was that if I don't have a cover yet, better to leave the image blank rather than put in another image, regardless of how relevant it is. So I commented out the image from the commons but it's still in the code for the info box. If other editors agree with me perhaps we should just use that image for now. Depending on how ambitious I am I may find an image of the actual cover and use that. But that requires finding a usable image and filling out the Wikipedia form for use of something that is copyrighted because it's a work of art, two things I'm not good at and don't like doing so not sure if/when I'll get to it. If you like that sort of stuff please have at it, alternatively give me some feedback on using the image I found in the commons, you can un-comment the code here and then do a preview to see what it would like or alternatively look in my Sandbox, at least for now to see it. --MadScientistX11 (talk) 00:59, 4 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

So I did my best. Image editing is just not my thing, I'm not sure why the "Original Edition" box shows up around it, it wasn't in the file I downloaded, at least I don't think it was. Anyway, I filled out the appropriate fair use form and while I don't think the image is perfect, it's better than no image and will do until someone with better image skills than I have wants to clean it up. --MadScientistX11 (talk) 23:38, 5 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Removing the Tags[edit]

Someone added two tags to this article that I think were both unjustified. One was that the article is written "from a fan's point of view". If you are going to make a claim like that you should post something on the Talk page to be specific about what language in particular is written "from a fan's point of view". I don't see anything un-encyclopedic in the article as it currently stands. There are no claims about the quality of Thompson's fiction at all which is what I would usually associate with being "from a fan's point of view". Indeed, the article says that Thompson was essentially a petty thief in his first job as a bellhop and was an alcoholic, both objective facts documented in the biography by Pollito and not the kind of facts a "fan" would include. The other tag was that the article doesn't have enough references. Considering that the majority of the article is a plot summary (which in my experience doesn't need a reference it's assumed to be taken from the novel itself as this is) the only parts that need references are the brief introduction and the Themes section. Given the amount of text in both those sections I think 2 references is more than adequate. The article could of course be expanded quite a bit and then would need more references but I think 2 references for a relatively minor novel with no controversial points (again if the tagger disagrees take to the talk page) are more than sufficient. The Pollito biography is universally recognized as the most authoritative and scholarly biography of Thompson. I looked for other biographies in the San Francisco library system and couldn't find any. I found an online article that further backs up some of the points in the Themes section and added that so I'm removing that tag as well. --MadScientistX11 (talk) 23:47, 4 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
