Fried or Fuchs?[edit]

Which is his real birth name - Fried or Fuchs? --1523 08:43, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Most foreign Wikipedia versions (and IMDb) give the name Vilmos (or Wilhelm) Fried as his real birth name. German Hollywood (obviously the main source of this article) does not. But German Hollywood also gives a wrong spelling for his birth place. His Name was Wilheim Fried Someone was trying to be funny it was vandalism —Preceding unsigned comment added by 138.162.128.53 (talk) 15:19, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Only eight sources on Google Books [1] give his name as "Wilhelm Fuchs", while forty-two [2] give it as "Wilhelm Fried". None give it as "Fuchs Vilmos" or "Fried Vilmos". One [3] (presumably erroneously, since it is not proper Hungarian naming order) gives it as "Vilmos Fuchs" and two [4] as "Vilmos Fried". — The Man in Question (gesprec) · (forðung) 05:10, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
An additional 4 printed sources give it as "William Friedman". Also given is the surname "Fried Fuchs". All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 23:32, 2 March 2016 (UTC).[reply]
141.237.102.239 changed it to Fuchs in 2020 based on the father's name, with the comment "His father's name was Fuchs and his mother's fried. That is what his only reliable biography by vanda krefft says. Don't change that again". Jay (Talk) 05:58, 5 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Tolcsva link[edit]

The link to the home page of Tolcsva is broken. It's [5] now (still maintained by Me-NET Student Ltd.). Btw. I think it should be mentioned that the page is in Hungarian. -- Anonymous 13:04, 28 June 2006 (GMT)

William Fox lost the use of his left arm since childhood[edit]

William Fox was a keen and talented golfer, remarkable because he lost the use of his left arm as a result of a childhood accident. I do not have the bibliographical reference. I have also seen old newsreel footage in a pay-tv documentary of him playing golf with his right arm.Melvannie (talk) 07:05, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

As I recall he lost use of his arm in the adult car accident but I could be wrong.--Jrm2007 (talk) 03:36, 5 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I thought it important that somewhere it should be noted that the original "Film pirate" is Mr. Fox himself. "Some of America's greatest innovators were thought of as pirates. When Thomas Edison invented the phonographic record player, musicians branded him a pirate out to steal their work and destroy the live music business, until a system was established so everyone could be paid royalties, which we today call the record industry. Edison, in turn, went on to invent filmmaking, and demanded a licensing fee from those making movies with his technology. This caused a band of filmmaking pirates, including a man named William, to flee New York for the then still wild West, where they thrived, unlicensed, until Edison's patents expired. These pirates continue to operate there, albeit legally now, in the town they founded: Hollywood. William's last name? Fox."

Year of death?[edit]

The header of the article has him dying in 1956 but the body 1952. Which is it?--Jrm2007 (talk) 03:37, 5 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Vilmos again[edit]

Hi, Sh nassau, as you have not added an edit summary to your revert, please explain why you reverted. I believe Vilmos,, at prsent, is unsourced, while Wilhelm is. As I indicated in my edit summary, the source that is used in the article says "Wilhelm" (chapter 1, page 5); and the name Vilmos is not in the source. If you think I made an error, and the name is in fact in the source, please add which page it is on, and a quote. Thanks. Please see as well the "Fried or Fuchs?" section on this talk page when this issue is adressed, using more sources. Thanks WikiHannibal (talk) 12:41, 28 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct, and since no one has responded in two years, I'm going to change it. I'm also going to correct the source's title in our citation (for some reason, instead of The Man Who Made the Movies, the title is given as William fox biography). As an addendum to the up-page "Fried or Fuchs?" topic, The Man Who Made the Movies gives Fuchs as Fox's birth surname and Fried as his mother's maiden name. 2a02:ab88:142:8d00:4408:8b6f:b9a:e796 added Vilmos again in Nov 2020 and did not provide any new sources. I have changed it back to Wilhem. Jay (Talk) 06:16, 5 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
