couple of errors[edit]

This article should rather be compared with e Italian DBI article [1] by Rinaldo Merlone listed in the weblinks, or with my own article (based on Merlone) in the German Wikipedia [2]:

  • According to the Gesta Berengarii Imperatoris, William was a Frank: There is a certain possibility, but nothing more, that the William mentioned by the Gesta Berengarii might be the same as the William father of Aleram. His Frankish origins can nevertheless be inferred from the fact that his son in his donation of 961 to the monastery of Grazzano is professing to Salic law
  • It is also probable that he gave his support to Berengar after Guy's death, for he appears, in 921, along with Lambert, Archbishop of Milan, and two other counts, Giselbert and Samson, as dilectissimi fideles of the Emperor. The counts were also cited as illustres comites. They stood opposed to Adalbert of Ivrea and others in rebellion against Berengar: this is getting practically everything wrong. The document is from 924, and it is referring to Lambert, Giselbert, Samson and count William as "dilectissimi fideles" not of Emperor Berengar I of Italy, but of Berengar's opponent, Rudolph II of Burgundy (who was supported and in 921 crowned by Adalbert of Ivrea). Again, there is only a certain likelihood, but not more, to assume that the count William mentioned in 924 was Aleram's father, given that there is no other "comes illustris" with name William attested in Italy at this time. The fact that he actually was a count is to be inferred from the above donation of 961 referring to him as "comes".
  • a diploma of his son's dating to around 933 fixes his death sometime between those two years (924 – 933): it does not really fix the date of William's death, but attests his son Aleram as "comes", and this -- together with the fact hat Aleram's donation in 961 is referring to his father William as "comes" -- seems to indicate that William died before 933 and left his title to Aleram.

Marquess/Margrave.[edit]

"William I, Marquess of Montferrat"

"He was the father of the first margrave Aleram."

Isn't Marquess the same as Margrave? YOMAL SIDOROFF-BIARMSKII (talk) 20:04, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
