Windows File Protection is a software utility shipped with Microsoft's Windows NT-based operating systems starting with Windows 2000.[1] The utility provides a method of repairing damage to or restoring cached versions of Windows system files.[2] This utility is replaced on Windows Vista by Windows Resource Protection.[3]


During normal operation, Windows File Protection will replace any system file it finds missing or incorrect from cached backups. Windows File Protection checks various file signatures and code signing catalogs against predefined correct versions. Any file changes which can not be replaced from the cached files will cause WFP to request the associated product installation CD-ROM. [4]

Windows File protection provides support for network administrators through Microsoft's MSRPC and terminal services.[2]
