Charges of racism[edit]

This would be a good place to quote additional Henty critics such as Rachel Maddow. I'm particularly interested in anything they say about this book - rather than about Henty himself.

Does any critic argue, for example, that any sympathetic treatment of a southern protagonist in a novel makes the author automatically racist? And is this the same sort of reasoning that makes Mark Twain racist for having a protagonist call blacks "niggers"?

Are the critics arguing that one aspect of a character trumps all other aspects, i.e., that no amount of sympathy expressed in words or actions can make up for any amount of support for the institution of slavery? (If so, let us quote those critics' arguments.) --Uncle Ed (talk) 11:54, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Notability[edit]

This tag: {notability|Books|date=August 2013} have been sitting here for 7 years. Isn't it time to come to a conclusion: either remove the article or the tag. I'm leaning towards removing the tag. Other ideas are welcomed. Creuzbourg (talk) 14:05, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
