WMSG web site[edit]

The official Web site has been a 404 for many days now, so I have removed it. I can't find an alternative Web address, however. - DavidWBrooks (talk) 19:16, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The 2008wmsg website exists but the specific links in our references are broken (3 in the Go section). Maybe the website has been reorganized and needs to be explored here. --P64 (talk) 16:27, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Draughts web site www.wmsg-draughts.org[edit]

Why is official draughts web site on blacklist of wikipedia? www.wmsg-draughts.org —Preceding unsigned comment added by 164.140.155.143 (talk) 09:44, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Anybody know why www.wmsg-draughts.org is blacklisted? It's a fine link for this article, but it's blocked as an external link. - DavidWBrooks (talk) 20:35, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

BBC coverage[edit]

its here --> http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7651145.stm hope that helps. (Hypnosadist) 22:43, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Subsequent Events[edit]

As this is reported as the inaugural WMSG event, what exactly are the plans for future events. Is this to become an annual or quadrennial event? Will it again be held in Beijing, or perhaps London, or is there a process in place to decide future hosts? I'll try to research this if I get the chance, but If anyone can give light to this information, please do add to the article. ThomasAndrewNimmo (talk) 00:47, 19 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

2012[edit]

I can't yet add this to the article, as I don't have references to hand. However, I can assure you (I'm tenuously involved) that the UK (British Go Association for one) was very keen to have the 2012 event hosted in the UK. In April, an international company was prepared to put up about GBP500,000 to find sponsors for GBP5,000,000 for the event. London wasn't in the running as a venue, but Manchester was pursued. A possible stumbling block was the availability of sufficient hotel rooms of suitable standard. Other cities (not all UK) were reportedly willing to be back-up venues. Trafford09 (talk) 12:02, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The British Go Association said in December,BritGo "The second World Mind Sports Games is provisionally planned for Manchester in August 2012." Hope or Expectation that the 2012 Olympic Games host country would host the 2nd WMSG goes back to 2005. --P64 (talk) 15:43, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"Hope or expectation ... goes back to 2005."
Probably I meant the early document (no date?) now linked just below and at the foot of the article. --P64 (talk) 22:26, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It appears that there will be an official announcement of dates (11-24 August 2012) and venue on November 17, http://neapolitanclub.altervista.org/eng/brazil%E2%80%99s-candidacy-to-host-the-world-mind-sport-games-in-2016.html So this will confirm the intended 4 year cycle.Tetron76 (talk) 16:25, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like it will be in Cardiff and poker might be happening. http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?sl=es&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Feldiario.deljuego.com.ar%2Fes%2Fsubmenunoticiadelmundo%2F1866-espana-en-la-copa-de-naciones-de-duplicate-poker.html Tetron76 (talk) 13:49, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Now where is that -11-17 announcement from London? --P64 (talk) 22:27, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Posted today at Bridge Winners
(quote) The International Mind Sports Association (IMSA) announced that the 2012 World Mind Sports Games will take place in Cardiff, Wales from Aug. 7-20 or in Strasbourg, France from August 9-23. The Association will choose between the two venues in the next 3 weeks.

The WMSG 2012 will be in Lille, France: http://www.imsaworld.com/site/news_full/25.html dllu (talk) 08:59, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Someone added "mathematical games" to the Sports section for 2012. Can anyone back this up with a reference? I haven't been able to find one... dllu (talk) 08:52, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't seen a reference to this, there are 4 Mind Sports events this year. Such an event sounds more likely for Sport Accord World Mind Games. But since IMSA website failed to have most basic links to WMSG2012 and you need Google to navigate the site someone might have first hand knowledge but it nakes no sence for IMsa to say absorb the Mental Calculations World Cup when the IFP appear to be behind the Prague Mind Sports festival. Its all very chaotic.Tetron76 (talk) 00:00, 6 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

2016[edit]

Note the title of that 2011-10-21 notice by neapolitanclub, linked by Tetron76 —presumably a reprint originally published by IMSA: Recent news. "Brazil's candidacy to host the World Mind Sports Games in 2016". By the way IMSA recognized the Brazil MSA which has three affiliates in turn, confederations for Chess-Draughts-Bridge, Go, and Poker. --P64 (talk) 22:27, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sport Accord World Mind Games 2011[edit]

I was wondering whether this event is being regarded as a continuation of WMSG as there is currently a redirect here from World Mind Games. If so should it have a subsection on this page? Obviously it is being run by IMSA and there are limited news items so far.Tetron76 (talk) 16:25, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Article layout[edit]

Since the venue for the 2012 WMSG is now confirmed, shouldn't this article be a general introduction to the event and 2008, 2012, and subsequent editions have their own articles - like the Olympics or any other major sports event? dllu (talk) 09:01, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. I'll start a new section, "Scope of these articles". --P64 (talk) 15:38, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

2008 organization[edit]

The International Mind Sports Assoc says,IMSA "The Games were organized by the International Mind Sports Association (IMSA) under the aegis of the General Association of International Sport Federations (GAISF) and with the support of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)."

The British Go Assoc says,BritGo "The event was instigated by the International Mind Sports Association (IMSA) and was organised by the Board and Card Games Administrative Center of the General Administration of Sport of China and the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sport." --probably from a document it has posted, which seems to be translated from Chinese.(see page 2)

--P64 (talk) 15:50, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the early document that I have mentioned just above and elsewhere at wikipedia. I have added this External links to a few articles --P64 (talk) 22:23, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • World Mind Sports Games. International Mind Sports Association. 2008 or earlier. Posted at usgo.org American Go Association. Confirmed 2011-08-31. (Second copy at World Bridge Federation.)

Scope of these articles[edit]

As dllu suggests (#Article layout) we should divide this article leaving a general one under this name. It will be good to take a first step before 2012 competition begins.

Currently we have these articles, where parenthetical bluelinks are redirects. Layout represents some relationships.

International Mind Sports Association (IMSA)

  • (2011) (1st) (SportAccord) World Mind Games —December, smaller, cash prizes, not covered by en:wikipedia(?)

We should pay attention this year to use or absence of "2nd W.M.S.G." in official and third-party coverage, and same for "1st W.M.S.G." in retrospect. If the Games are now called 2008 and 2012 primarily, we should move the "1st" articles to "2008".
(W.M.S.G. represents the full name, only in Talk space. Some redirects using WMSG may be useful but none, I guess, using W.M.S.G.)

Most above Talk concerns the general W.M.S.G. or the quadrennial series rather than the 1st/2008 could be expanded. The lead section of "Bridge at the 1st W.M.S.G." may provide some content or refs that will be useful here or at "2008 W.M.S.G." or both. --P64 (talk) 16:20, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I completely agree. If no one else beats me to it, I will look at it as soon as I have the time... dllu (talk) 13:18, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
At "Bridge" including that section of the main article, I am the author of almost everything but the basic results (using templates borrowed from WP Olympics?). On my own I would return to these articles only during or after the 2012 event. I watch and I'll help with the main articles soon after someone else starts. --P64 (talk) 15:29, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have now created the article 2008 World Mind Sports Games (same name format as the Olympics articles) and copied the relevant material from this article over there. I will edit this article into a general one shortly. Also, I have changed the redirect for 1st World Mind Sports Games to lead to the new article.dllu (talk) 14:09, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There. I did...something. It is nowhwere near perfect, so I hope anyone who has any improvements will make them. Especially the references could probably do with some work... dllu (talk) 20:46, 4 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

England or UK[edit]

I notice that the medal table lists England. This is peculiar, as England is not an Olympic member, it is the United Kingdom that is the member. Is it the case that the WMSG allows the multiple constituents of the UK to take part? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lecale42 (talkcontribs) 12:41, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at both the IMSA and the WBF (all three English medals were won in bridge) official results, it does seem that the IMSA - like most international sports federations - does indeed treat the countries of the UK as separate entities. dllu (talk) 13:08, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's quite amusing actually. The IGF consider the UK should compete as one country, however Bridge, and perhaps others, are taking a different view. Not very joined up thinking!--Lecale42 (talk) 14:29, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
England, Scotland, and Wales, yes. Our most useful article section is English Bridge Union#History, which covers the British Bridge League and Bridge Great Britain. --ie, that is where we have BBL and BGB redlinks :-(
Northern Ireland, no. It competes in the home internationals and similar junior play as does Eire, but Ireland has a unified national federation and a unified team outside the British Isles since 1955 (second and third paragraphs). I don't know when or whether any Ireland players have been NI nationals.
I suppose that IMSA permits its four constituents to define nationality. WBF defers to its zonal organizations such as the European Bridge League. Corsica and Faroe have competed in Europe, where France and Denmark field powerful teams. Reunion and French Polynesia do compete in the Olympiad/WMSG. See also Macao, Hong Kong, Taiwan. I suppose that IOC arrangements are influential, but not decisive. --ie, "decisive" only if regional bridge officials make them so. --P64 (talk) 15:04, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In international bridge competition it was Great Britain rather than the United Kingdom that devolved in year 2000. Nicola Gardener/Nicola Smith won medals as a member of Great Britain and England teams (first paragraph). --P64 (talk) 15:10, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The IOC aren't consistent, anyway, because e.g. the British and US Virgin Islands, along with other non-sovereign territories, have their own NOCs and have competed at the Olympics. I may be wrong, but I think Hong Kong and Macao still do as well. Taiwan is a sovereign state to everyone but mainland China, but that's a different discussion... dllu (talk) 07:39, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Redirects[edit]

We should use these redirects routinely.

  • 2008 WMSG redirects where it should. I have used it once while rewriting the second paragraph.
  • 2012 WMSG should redirect, but I decline to create it while the target is red.

WMSG is taken by a radio station. OK.

"Games" disambiguates, including a long list of Games#Nicknames. We may know more than "W.M.S.G." that should be added, but not yet the Sport Accord thing, because we haven't found it notable to cover. --P64 (talk) 20:05, 5 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
