Flag icons and place names[edit]

I have reverted the use of {{flagathlete}} applied to the venues, because it is wrong in principle. Suppose we allow it here, and it spreads to other articles. Then we have a situation where we have a template applying to both athletes and places (bad enough when it is only named for one of them), then someone makes a change to remedy a problem as it applies to athletes and thereby breaks the template as it applies to places (or vice versa). This is obviously unacceptable.

In theory it might be OK to write and use a new template, say {{flagplace}}. However, I suspect that there is good reason why no-one has written such a template, namely that it is not necessary, or that it might be difficult to gain consensus as to what such a template should produce. I think the table is fine as it stands since there isn't the same need to distinguish venues visually by country as there is for athletes. However, a quick look round some other sporting result articles shows that a better solution, if one wants a neatly lined up table, is to separate out the country into a separate column, for example as in FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, or as we already do in the ITU Triathlon World Cup article (where it makes more sense, with multiple cities per country). I would have no objection if someone wants to re-work the table on these lines.
