Development[edit]

I think that the development section should include more about the experimental game workshop? -- I think the premise of that is very interesting to result in all the awards/picking up of it, etc. as it's about 1 person making a 'game' within a week. And the (experimental original) is largely the game of the world of goo corportion, minus the networking of seeing others status, of course. Someone willing to edit that stuffs? Oogles (talk) 02:54, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Agreed. I saw the uncanny resemblance to the original game and wondered why its origins were not talked about in the article. 69.229.226.70 (talk) 11:43, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I also agree. `Tower of Goo' and the Experimental Gameplay project where it started are an important part of World of Goo's development.98.235.81.240 (talk) 04:09, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's awful it's still not mentioned in the article. Oogles (talk) 07:12, 6 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
And still awful it's not included. Oogles (talk) 09:21, 28 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Physics[edit]

It might be nice to add a bit on the physics included in the game. here's a first stab at some description. if anyone cares to, just improve on this and put all or part of it in the main article:

  • Much of the game is based on building planar trusses out of extension-compression springs (rendered as "goo").
  • The goo balls adhere to the truss (to make joints). they do seem to have a breaking point.
  • In some scenes the goo seems to adhere to walls etc (though not as strongly as to the truss.)
  • The environment includes gravity. some scenes include lighter than air balloons.
  • Perturbations cause the structures to oscillate, such as adding weight when building, or movement of objects in the scene (apparently including the movement of the remaining autonomous goo balls).

DKEdwards (talk) 20:14, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm really on the line about this. Part of me thinks that it would be violating WP:NOT game guide and that it would be fairly obvious. But the other part of me thinks that it would be interesting to include it as the elements that make the game different.Wise dude321 (talk) 17:02, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Europe release[edit]

When is this coming out in europe for the VC ? Date needs to be added to the wiki page to. Captain duck (talk) 17:52, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's not, it's getting a boxed retail release in Europe.Mr T (Based) (talk) 18:42, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As far as i'm aware, it'll be out in Europe around February/March 2009, so it's only out in NA right now. Serio (talk) 19:08, 18 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
According to http://www.rtlgames.de/news.php?xml=/xml/1042.php, it'll be out (at least in Germany) before Christmas!!

FROM ME, A RANDOM WIKI USER: Not sure where to put this so I'll put it here. But I am just reporting that the link to "2d Boy" links back to the game page for World of Goo. Rather than linking to a page about the company rather than the game. Hopefully someone can fix that. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.30.210.136 (talk) 03:32, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Europe Release - - New Developments[edit]

2DBoy has stated ( [1] ) that it is no longer doing the special 6th chapter in Europe. Additionally, they are releasing it on PAL WiiWare. I'm not sure how to properly incorporte this into the article, so thoughts are welcome =) DtD (talk) 02:44, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Story[edit]

I think we should have a section for the story. It is existant, albi it requires minor interpertation, i'm sure we could all find a happy, agreeable canon. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wise dude321 (talkcontribs) 04:04, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Seconded. The story is very abstract, yet told like by a child. I actually just came here to fill the gaps I didn't notice in the plot. --91.16.13.28 (talk) 12:50, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. There is a plot, that truly feels like what would happen if Dr. Seuss dropped jelly and physics on The Lorax. Wise dude321 (talk) 23:26, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I would put just a few lines about the "premise", so the ending is not given away. StevePrutz (talk) 03:43, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nah, I think we should give the entire thing and add a spoiler tag.Wise dude321 (talk) 05:28, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nah, Why not add everything with no spoiler tag. Anyways spoiler tag can not be added any more.--SkyWalker (talk) 06:17, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You've got to leave a little mystery, so people can experience said product for themselves. StevePrutz (talk) 16:11, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please see WP:SPOILER. Wikipedia does not avoid spoilers and does not use spoiler warnings.Mr T (Based) (talk) 16:52, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
After reading over the page I've decided to add a story section. It still needs contributions and editing, so please, add. Wise dude321 (talk) 19:18, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
While wikipedia does not avoid spoilers and does not use spoiler warning, I'm quite sure it's possible to write it in a way that would get a reader to realize there will be spoiler type information without actually have a spoiler warning and without us avoiding the spoilers.
Is there some reason wikipedia would disallow something to that effect? And I do mean by exact rules disallowing this, not anyones wide interpretation of the rules Annoying username (talk) 04:48, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There is an exact rule against spoiler warnings in all forms. But I need clarity on what you're saying. Are we saying that we should give a spoiler warning, without a spoiler warning?Wise dude321 (talk) 05:36, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, THAT was HUGE!!! It needs citations and proof-reading, but I hope you guys liked it. Wise dude321 (talk) 01:51, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The plot is too excessive, it really needs to be cut down. - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! Now, he can figure out the length of things easily. 03:38, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I really tried to avoid everything that wasn't needed. It couldn't be re-written though.Wise dude321 (talk) 23:11, 20 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Logical Inconsistency?[edit]

The cutscene at the end of chapter 3 shows people standing in front, behind, to the left and right of each other, (not to mention the people already have height) while looking upwards before the launch of product Z. If I'm not mistaken, that means the world is already qualified as a 3-D world before the launch of product Z...

True, but later (Mainly with the talk with M.O.M. it is implied that the world was once 2-D. If I remember correctly the character says "Now that the world is 3-D I can't tell where anything is!". Also, when the Information Superhighway sign pops up, it says "Welcome to the Third Dimension". And seriously, it's just a step below an art game, it can do what it wants.Wise dude321 (talk) 23:07, 20 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
By "2D", they are not purely two-dimensional, but there is a vague third dimension. But you do have a point, throughout the entire game, no part of it is TRULY 2D (this game could not take place in Flatland). If it makes you feel any better, an idea is to first imagine a twenty-seventh letter of the alphabet, replace the "Z" in Project Z with that new letter, and replace the cubes with tesseracts, and then claim when there are references to a third dimension, replace it with references to a fourth spatial dimension. And regarding the goo balls' movements, imagine they build in prisms according to your own shape, so 3D wobbling is rendered impossible. Maybe you could tell that to 2D Boy and ask them to make that special mod to the game, which can be purchased instead of the "normal" World of Goo. But it would be cool for a REAL 3D WoG, where you have to build in THREE dimensions. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.244.124.227 (talk) 20:57, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Soundtrack[edit]

Since it's now officially released, should we mention it more? --Artman40 (talk) 21:41, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! Now, he can figure out the length of things easily. 21:57, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Inspiration for the game[edit]

I get a strong sense of deja-vu from reading this article and some online reviews of the game. Isn't this just lemmings with a new physics engine?

Maybe a new section on game genre/similar games should be added? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.90.122.56 (talk) 12:53, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unless there's an official, reliable source that makes a clear connection between this game and Lemmings (I know some review sites have done this), I don't think we should go into detail about other, similar games. We should certainly not go into what may have inspired this game unless there's something directly from the game's developer stating as such - otherwise, it counts as original research.
However, the game clearly does fall into a general category of physics-based puzzle games, of which there have been quite a few lately. The article already mentions (in the lead) that the game is a puzzle game with an emphasis on physics, so it's probably already covered. And IMO, there's not much you can say about the combination of physics and puzzle games that isn't already covered in puzzle computer game and physics respectively - for the most part, physics simulation just provides the basis for the puzzles, but otherwise the game plays like most any other puzzle game: You just have to figure out how to solve the puzzle. I don't think we really need a special genre article for physics-based puzzle games, although a category for such would probably be appropriate. — KieferSkunk (talk) — 18:20, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Piracy[edit]

Should we mention the high level of piracy of this game? The developer estimates (because of some technical speak) that the piracy rate is like, 3/4 copies are pirated.Wise dude321 (talk) 18:40, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Can you point us to a source? — KieferSkunk (talk) — 00:35, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yep. http://2dboy.com/page/5/ Wise dude321 (talk) 02:48, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, thanks. This will probably be okay to mention in the form of: "The game's developer estimates that only one in ten copies of the PC version of the game were legitimately purchased." The verifiable part of this is that it's an estimate by the developer, not a hard statistic (it's impossible to verify how much piracy has actually taken place). Incidentally, I found a direct link to that specific blog post: http://2dboy.com/2008/11/13/90/KieferSkunk (talk) — 23:04, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I read farther in and he said that the new estimate is 82%Wise dude321 (talk) 05:23, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
How about mentioning that this has (in)directly led to the publishers filing for Chapter 11? I think if someone is studying intellectual property as a lawyer for instance it is difficult to have examples of the impact that software piracy has as too many people think it does no real harm. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.147.26.139 (talk) 21:24, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
We have no way of knowing what would have happened if the game is pirated less. Likely it would have sold more but it is unlikely all or even most people who pirated would have purchased it. It is even possible it would have had lower sales if fewer people had pirated it. Indeed the non-RS ref from 2D boy itself mentions that reducing the piracy rate wouldn't have increased sales much. So yeah, claiming it lead to the company filing for bankruptcy is highly misleading Nil Einne (talk) 12:51, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Mentioning it without context runs the risk of making it appear that this game is particularly badly pirated. That's not the case - it appears to be pirated at roughly the same as the PC industry average, or only a little worse. This Gamasutra article says another (DRM protected) casual PC game had a 92% piracy rate. The rate for full-on, big-studio PC games (which get all the DRM protection bells-and-whistles) isn't much better - many reliable sources quote this lengthy post by THQ director Michael Fitch (he's quoted by GamePro, SlashGear, and TechCrunch) who puts the general PC piracy rate at around 80%. Computer and Video Games (gosh, I remember when they actually published that on paper) quotes the developers of Championship Manager who say their game has a 90% piracy rate. So saying, without qualification, that World of Goo has a 90% piracy rate is misleading - we can say it has the same or marginally higher rate of piracy. Given those numbers, I'm not sure it's worth mentioning at all - the WoG blog post isn't an indication that WoG is particularly badly pirated, it's simply the WoG developers finally realising the horror of the PC games piracy environment. 87.112.81.29 (talk) 22:49, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like 2DBoy will be helping a bit...[edit]

Types of goo[edit]

I think this new section of the page (from "Regular Goo" down to "World of Goo Corporatio Goo") should be removed and replaced with a brief paragraph summarising the variety of goo types. It seems excessively long, not particularly relevant, and is full of typos and poor formatting. --Davidcx (talk) 03:39, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Loading phrases[edit]

I just added the phrases. I wasn't sure where it should go, so I created an Easter Eggs section for them. I'm sure I've got all. Kyle Berman (talk) 03:32, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but a list of phrases from the game is WP:CRUFT and is thus inappropriate for Wikipedia. --ThomasO1989 (talk) 11:03, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pricing[edit]

From now until October 19th, 2D Boy is letting you choose your own price for the game. Any price, like $400 or $0.01. I think this should be noted in the article (rct2guy (talk) 20:55, 13 October 2009 (UTC))[reply]

Publisher List[edit]

Nintendo only published the WiiWare version in Japan (2D Boy dealt with it for other regions). I'm unsure of how to adjust the infobox to correct this though, since the [JP] (or other region) tagging is usually superscripted. --Thunderbird8 (talk) 06:38, 14 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
