Contradiction[edit]

The rules listed for Yacht directly conflict with the "rule differences" listed on the Yahtzee page. I believe the mathisfun.com page is wrong. Aetataureate (talk) 11:25, 4 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, we have four different games claiming to be Yacht:
  • The one described here
  • The one described at Yahtzee
  • The one at the mathsisfun.com reference, which is just Yahtzee, or maybe Boatzee (which is Yahtzee minus the Yahtzee bonus and joker features)
  • The one at the yachtgame.com reference
I'm not sure if the game I originally heard of as Yacht (from Hoyle's Rules of Games if I remember correctly) is the Yacht described at Yahtzee or is different again. But clearly we're in a mess. Meanwhile, I'm going to add a contradict notice. — Smjg (talk) 18:45, 19 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
One trouble with games is that there is not always a clear set of rules. Having said that, It seems to me that it is likely that the one described at Yahtzee is the closest to Yacht. The rules there are, I think, based on The Complete book of Games by Wood & Goddard, which seemes to date from 1938 (ie well pre-Yahtzee) (http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=V11LAAAAYAAJ&focus=searchwithinvolume&q=yacht). Other varieties seem to be called Yacht to avoid being accused of copying Yahtzee, being just Yahtzee with minor rule changes. I don't have access to The Complete book of Games but I suspect that the one described at Yahtzee is based on that book, at least I have no reason to doubt it. It'd be interesting to know of any earlier references for Yacht. It seems to me that it's likely that things like the bonus are Yahtzee features and not part of Yacht. So my recommendation is to base the Yacht article on the Yacht rules described at Yahtzee adding the Wood/Goddard ref and noting that other versions out there do not use the same rules, being closer to Yahtzee. Maximum score is perhaps 302 in the Wood/Goddard Yacht, despite what I said in a comment in an edit to the Yahtzee article. 1s to 6s - 105 (21*5), 4K - 24 (for 6666X), FH - 28 (for 66655), LittleS (25), BigS (40), Ya (50), Ch (30) = 302 Some guesswork here since I don't actually know what everything scores (especially the Straights) in this version. Nigej (talk) 10:54, 20 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
See also: http://www.family-games-treasurehouse.com/yacht.html is similar. Straights are both 30, maximum score is 297. Also http://www.mindbenders.webspace.virginmedia.com/Downloads/Yacht%20Scoresheets.pdf is similar. http://boardgames.about.com/od/yacht/a/yacht_rules.htm scores 4K differently (all dice not just the 4). Also: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=54RBVIJg3mcC&pg=PT203&lpg=PT203&dq=yacht+score+sheet&source=bl&ots=E0n6tEehxJ&sig=OFzYQSbaTiE9OprTL9ozZ7dbPAk&hl=en&sa=X&ei=ziwMVcCZBoGd7gbd6IGgCQ&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=yacht%20score%20sheet&f=false Nigej (talk) 14:24, 20 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It seems to me now that the bonus and three of a kind are NOT part of Yacht. Also: the little (small/short) straight is 12345, the big (large/long) straight is 23456, 12 categories (the Yahtzee 13 without 3K). Precise scoring in the "lower section" is partly down to "local rules". Choice (ie Chance) is clear. Yacht seems to score 50. Straight values are still unclear to me (often 30/30, still want to know what Wood/Goddard has). FH scores sum of the dice generally - Triple MUST be different to pair (25 as a scoring variation perhaps). 4K scores the sum of the 4 dice (sum of all 5 as a scoring variation). Nigej (talk) 14:40, 20 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
So there's the original Yacht, from which Yahtzee is derived, and there are various games independently derived from Yahtzee and named Yacht by creators unaware that there's already a similar game with that name. Hence the confusion. So my guess is that this article is describing one of the latter. Thinking about it, I think what we need to do is work out how best to improve the article to explicitly address the existence of multiple versions. — Smjg (talk) 02:33, 21 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think they are completely unaware of the Yacht predecessor, but it seems to be common for unofficial variations of Yahtzee to be referred to a Yacht, even though they differ in a number of respects from the pre-Yahtzee Yacht. Nigej (talk) 07:24, 21 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Rewritten as best I can with the references available to me. Nigej (talk) 09:18, 21 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Game Design Resource[edit]

As a published tabletop roleplaying game designer, I felt it necessary to recognize this game as a valuable public domain resource for game designers everywhere. The gameplay mechanisms are lean and offer a good framework to support a more ambitious game of your own making. Whether it's to emulate the source game or to be used as a jump-off point for a different game system, the design possibilities derived from the Yacht dice game are staggering.
