Merge?

There has been suggestion that too many of Yahoo!'s services have their own pages. This is a borderline case, so please discuss at Talk:Yahoo!. - IMSoP 15:37, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Oh, I think Yahoo Messenger is certainly notable in its own right. Coffee 08:59, 12 August 2005 (UTC)

Booters

I think maybe this article could use some an outline of the problems thats yahoo chat has like the booters and third party chat clients. -matt

Clients

There should be a 3rd-Party Client section, like at the AOL Instant Messenger article. I know they exist, but I'm not familiar.

Details about the Mac version

This blog has some details about the history of the Mac Yahoo messenger: http://blog.megacity.org/archives/002200.php

Dunno if it's true. Just passing it along.

Interesting blog. Just thought I would put this under the same header since it applies to the Mac version: I very much disagree with the comment about 3.0b1 in this wikipedia article. It is much more different from the old 2.5.3 version. It now supports setting your status to the current iTunes song, it has avatar/display picture support, and stealth mode, all "differences in a major sense" in my opinion. In addition, the beta readme that pops up on the first launch notes that the next beta will include voice chat support. This is a major milestone for the Mac client, yet the article makes it appear to be a tiny change. The Mac client is much, much closer to being on par with the Windows client now, even if it's only a beta version.

This is a major milestone for the Mac client, yet the article makes it appear to be a tiny change. --A promise of coming features in software is NOT a milestone. Jeez. If it comes great, but until then it's not a milestone, it's press release. I also think that the features added are not major changes in functionality. They're nice, but hardly must have features. Ooooh, it shows my current iTunes song, great. Am I still barred from effective communication with most of the other users? Ohhhhhh--pretty avatars!

The Mac client is much, much closer to being on par with the Windows client now, --But the Windows MSN client for Mac OS X is years behind the Windows version. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Herr von underpants (talkcontribs) 00:28, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Bad link

Why do we need a link for finding invisible users? That's not even ethical!--Cloviz 17:16, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Unverified Research/Claims

"Someone however can block this by selecting 'allow only messenges from people in my buddy list', but this can be an annoyance in chat rooms, although Yahoo! is working hard to resolve this issue"- this appears to be unverified research, and a citation is needed -Dbwiki148 02:47, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

I removed this sentence from the article: Surprisingly, the BBC reported on August 5 2006 that "Download Yahoo messenger" was the sixth most likely search term to return links to malware. The sentence included this reference, but that article doesn't rank those search terms in any order. 192.127.94.7 10:06, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

Audibles/IMVironments

Currently I don't have the time to do so, but a section on Audibles and IMVironments would be in order. Kat, Queen of Typos 00:23, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

Vendor lock-in?

Do you think Yahoo messenger contributes to Vendor lock-in? Would it help to have a category identifying Category:Non-interoperable systems? The issue is being voted on, please contribute your vote / opinion: here. Pgr94 23:27, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Nope because it comunicates with the MSN chat system too —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.121.74.148 (talk) 21:30, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Usage Statistics

Are there any available numbers on how many people use Yahoo messenger?--Crossmr 17:56, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Yahoo! Messenger.gif

Image:Yahoo! Messenger.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Significance of yahoomessenger.exe

I cannot think of a reason why the main process of the program is mentioned. As such, I suggest that it be removed from the article.Rayor of Dominaria 04:16, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Hacker threats to IM use are not a conflict of interest

re: 14:17, 24 July 2008 MrOllie (Talk | contribs) (26,175 bytes) (rm apparent COI) (undo)

The removed text was:

The threat of infection by these two methods is substantial and growing. The IM Security Center, a collaboration between security companies and corporations, has tracked attacks over IM since 2003 and shows well over 1000 distinct attacks over the public IM networks. The first half of 2007 saw an 84% increase in IM attacks over the first half of 2006. While IM-specific attacks remain a small percentage of overall virus and malware threats, the continued growth in usage of IM, along with the rapid adoption of IM in the workplace (See Instant Messaging) make IM an attractive vector for hackers, and both individuals and companies must take precautions to avoid infection.

I don't see how this is a COI, as any encyclopedic entry about a communications medium must be responsible enough to also cover the risks inherent in the use of it. The passage even finishes with an admonition to take precautions.

I'll re-insert it tomorrow unless a valid objection is raised here for discussion. -DKM- (talk) 20:30, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Yahoo! Messenger events like "Hack Day"

I think we should mention special Yahoo! Messenger events that happen every now and then. Like Yahoo! Messenger Hack Day. Ref here

I think you should stop suggesting things, and maybe just do them. I also think you should buy a hammer. And with that hammer: Rule The World.

URI Scheme Link / Expansion

It's nice that this section is included, but could we perhaps add a full list of commands and parameters or create a wikipedia list page for a comprehensive listing? Or at the very least could we maybe link to a page with such a listing? I've searched the internet and all I ever find are partial listings of the most commonly-used ones, but I'm sure there are others and there must be some resource that we could find and share with that information for those who are interested or need to find out. As for me, I'm doing research on this subject in order to build an application that integrates some IM functionality and, like anyone doing research, WP is usually the first stop. Unfortunately, the information here is incomplete and every page on the web that I can find seems to be so as well. Thanks all.

Calls section - worth checking

I've just added Yahoo! Messenger#Calls. I was a bit confused though. The article links to http://messenger.yahoo.com/ which has "more info" links for "Web" and "iPhone". The iPhone link takes me here, which has no mention of being able to make calls. However, there is also a "UK & Ireland" link, which has its own pair of "more info" links for "Web" and "Mobile". The "Mobile" link takes me here, where it lists Android, Blackberry, iPhone, and "Other Phones". The linked iPhone page says "Now with video conversation" and "With Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone, use voice and video calling to connect with your IM friends in brand new ways". Does this mean that in the USA only iPhone is supported - without voice or video calls - but in the UK & Ireland, a broader range of mobile OSs is supported - with voice and video calls?

Actually, the linked Android page just says "Status: Available on Android" and doesn't mention voice or video calling until the features section. Perhaps because the feature is in beta? But it doesn't actually mention that here though, only on the app's store entry.
