The history of Yongsan is more interesting than you might think...[edit]

Yongsan (formerly Ryongsan, before grammatical/diction changes in Hangul were implemented in the early 20th century) has more history than what is indicated here and at the Yongsan Garrison article. Ryongsan was a river crossing point (not as big as Mapo maybe), and had both a smaller palace for some obscure royal family member and a fairly significant temple in its precints where King Kojong sent representatives to pray for rain. Both these are recorded in the Korean Repository - 1893-1895 - can't remember the exact dates. Ryongsan is also where Isabella Bird Bishop set off on her trip down the South Han River. (See Bishop, Korea and her Neighbors). Additionally, it had been the site of truce talks between the Japanese and Koreans during the Imjin Waerin (1592-1598, or thereabouts). (Also in the Korean Repository)

From 1884 to 1894 the Chinese were dominant in Korea and they actually had a military presence near Seoul. From conversations with Korean military officers, I believe the Chinese were encamped at the current site of Yongsan Army Garrison. I think the Japanese took over the site after their victory over the Chinese in 1894/5 but didn't start erecting permanent buildings until after defeating the Russians in 1905, when they began stationing large-scale military units into the country.

Additionally, from older photographs it appears as if the Japanese Railroad Bureau headquartered themselves out of Yongsan: the area contained offices, clubs, a training station and personnel quarters.

I'd do the writing but I can barely string two words together; I'd be more than willing to help with research, tho'. 144.59.12.230 (talk) 03:53, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Thomas Aidan Bothwell[reply]

Yeah, I agree. From this old map, you can see the the IJA HQ was right next door to the train station. Not only that, but the founder of one of Korea's first martial arts schools probably lived in this area as he worked for the Survey Department of the "Chosen Railway Ministry of Transportation" in this area as of 1939, when he returned from working in Manchuria for the South Manchurian Railway Company. His name was Hwang Kee and he was the founder of Moo Duk KwanTang Soo Do, and he started publicly teaching at Yongsan station in November 1945, by borrowing space at his employer's offices and warehouses at that time. If only I could find out more information, photos and details from this period in history. Rees (talk) 21:25, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
