A problem with the 'Zaan' is that, while it is often called a river in English, it is in fact a water that is not easily classified. It has no real beginning or and an no direction of flow. I am no expert on this subject, but it seems that the Zaan originally may have been a kind of river like the Amstel, but later became part of the IJ estuary, until it was separated from the IJ by a dam around 1300.
