Life[edit]

Reneaum gained her doctorate in law from the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona in 2014[1] which is where she also gained a master's degree.[2] Her PhD thesis was titled "a criminological contribution to the discussion on the exemption of victims of intimate partner violence from testifying in criminal proceedings".[3]

She also holds a second masters qualification in Criminal Law and Comparative Social Problems from the University of Barcelona in addition to a first degree in Legal Sciences from the Central American University, San Salvador in El Salvador.[2]

She is a Mexican who spent over twenty years working in organisations like Amnesty International Mexico before she applied to work for the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IAHCR). The vacancy was created because the previous office holder's term had not been renewed because of alleged workplace harassment.[4]

Her appointment was announced in May and she began work at the start of June 2021 as IAHCR's Executive Secretary.[5] Her appointment was for four years and that contract could be extended for another four years but then another person must take over. She was appointed by the OAS's secretary general, Luis Almagro, as a person of "independence and high moral standing" with a good understanding of human rights[6] from ten candidates chosen for interview from 450 applicants.[7] Her CV was published for public scrutiny.[6]
