Abbie Hutty[edit]

  • ... that ExoMars engineer, Abbie Hutty (pictured), is the youngest ever Fellow of the IMechE?
  • Reviewed: Knave-Go-By
  • Comment: The article has been nominated for deletion so we should await the outcome of that discussion. Has been kept at AfD.

  • Article is new enough and long enough. It is neutral and there are no apparent copyright problems. It draws on a wide range of sources, the large majority of which are appropriate. A DYK review has been completed. This is an interesting article and would be a good addition to DYK. However, there are some issues. Firstly, the article is currently being considered for deletion. It looks likely to be kept, but should not appear on the front page until the discussion is closed. The other issues need addressing:
  • There are some statements in the article which are not sourced. It may be that some of the existing sources cover them, but (especially as this is a biography of a living person), they need to be explicitly sourced.
  • One sentence is sourced to LinkedIn; although perhaps sufficient for her current job title, it would be great if there is a better source available.
  • The September 2016 edition of The Engineer is referenced, but this needs more detail - which article on which page supports the statement?
  • The page to which the unoosa reference links does not mention Hutty; perhaps a subpage does?
  • The hook is not fully supported by the source, which states that she was (at the time) the youngest Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, but not whether she was the youngest ever fellow.
  • The picture is appropriately licensed but is not clear at small size. It could potentially be drastically cropped, but it's probably best not to use it on the front page.
Because of the various sourcing issues, I've not fully reviewed every source used, but will do so if and when the initial issues are addressed. Warofdreams talk 22:50, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
@Warofdreams: I've fixed the sourcing issues. The Engineer reference is an online "Q&A with spacecraft engineer Abbie Hutty" which says "I am the structures engineer on the ExoMars mission", but doesn't verify all the information preceding it, so I've dropped another source in. I don't think the picture is suitable main page material; if wishes were horses and beggars rode the Grand National, I'd use http://www.womanthology.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Abbie-Hutty-300-x-400.jpg but that's non-free.
If you want a more straightforward hook, I'd go for ALT1 ... that Abbie Hutty hopes there really is Life on Mars? (It'll make David Bowie fans take notice). Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:46, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
@Ritchie333: Lots of good work on this, thanks, I think it's nearly there. Do you have a page number for the article in source 5 which verifies the information? I've looked through the magazine, but still can't see it. The other sources look good. Her first two awards need sourcing or removing, and then I believe it's ready. ALT1 is an interesting hook, but is there anything on whether she has been involved in looking for life on Mars, has said she hopes it is found, or believes it exists? It might be possible to change the hook a bit to something clearly justified by the article, based on her contribution to Horizon, though I suspect it would be less attention grabbing. I've gone all the way through the Engineer source cited at the start of the "Career" section but I can't see anything except a photo of her, so I've had to take that out I've fixed up the other sources in the "Awards" section. I've dropped another source into the article (http://principiaspacediary.org/abbie-hutty-on-finding-life-on-mars-and-how-engineers-have-all-the-fun/) which includes the quotation "... as those missions have taught us more and more about Mars, we’ve actually learnt that there could still be separate, Mars life, living there already, or that lived there in the past. That’s what our mission hopes to find out. To do that, we have a REALLY big drill – 2 metres long!" which does back up ALT1. As ever, it's a balance between having something factually accurate against something that's quirky enough to make people want to click on the article when it gets to the main page. All issues now resolved, ALT1 approved now source provided. Warofdreams talk 17:00, 19 October 2017 (UTC)
  • FYI, the primary author of this article, Jesswade88, is away at a STEM conference in the US currently and so has been too busy to attend to these developments. She was quite nonplussed that it was nominated for deletion so it's good that we're past that now. Andrew D. (talk) 17:21, 19 October 2017 (UTC)
