Ba (gastropod)[edit]

  • ... that Ba humbugi, an endangered land snail found only on one Fijian island, was named due to an "irresistible impulse"? Source: [1] "This was followed by a an irresistible impulse to use the specific name humbugi.
    • ALT1:... that Ba humbugi is an endangered land snail found only on one Fijian island? Source: [2] "This is a land snail naturally restricted to forests of Viti Levu, Fiji [...] This species is listed as Endangered "
    • ALT2:... that Ba humbugi and other inventive names for Pacific land snails were thought to "either lighten the reader's day or engender hostility", according to a review of the book which named them? Source: JSTOR 2413178 "Creative generic nomenclature, alluded to above, elsewhere emulates the father of the binomen and may either lighten the reader's day or engender hostility. [...] Ba derives from the Fijian Mba district, its only species (humbugi) from "an irresistible urge."
    • ALT3:... that you won't be able to find the endangered snail Ba humbugi on Christmas Island? Source: "restricted to forests of Viti Levu, Fiji" above. Also, as per IUCN, only four specimens have ever been collected; they're all either in Honolulu or Chicago.

  • New enough (created by Umimmak on 2 December 2017), long enough (2,991 characters "readable prose size"), fully referenced. Source verified. Main, ALT1, ALT2 and ALT3 are all okay. ALT3 preferred. QPQ done. No image. Save for Christmas (25 December). Hawkeye7 (discuss) 06:06, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
@Yoninah: because reviewers in the past have requested that hooks don't just have a binomen and that I say what the species is. @Hawkeye7: do you have a preference? Also is there a reason you changed to pipe-link instead of making use of the redirect? Umimmak (talk) 04:42, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
I actually prefer AT3a. I've changed to the redirect, per WP:NOTBROKEN. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 00:19, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
@Yoninah: @Hawkeye7: okay we don't have to say what it is, but I think it'd be better to either strike the "one" in this new hook or replace it with "any". Umimmak (talk) 00:23, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
That makes sense. Done. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 00:41, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
  • @Umimmak: you're right, usually a hook should be based on fact and not misleading, like the ones we accept for April Fools' Day. But not saying that it's a snail makes this so much more hooky and quirky for Christmas. @Hawkeye7: could you restore your tick for ALT3a please? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 18:04, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
ALT3a approved. For the record, I do not regard it as misleading at all. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:30, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
  • Me neither. Yoninah (talk) 22:04, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
