... that philologist Georgiana Simpson (pictured) was the first African American woman to receive a PhD in the United States?

Well referenced and neutral. Picture is free. Both hooks are sound but the first is more pithy and more interesting in my view. Unfortunately, it's not nearly long enough at around 3000 characters excluding headings, quotes, captions etc. It was about 1000 characters in April 2015 so will need to be expanded to around 5000 to qualify as a 5x expansion. I will review it for close paraphrasing etc if it is expanded to the necessary size. Philafrenzy (talk) 09:52, 14 February 2016 (UTC)

AGF on offline sources. No close paraphrasing or copy-vios detected. On reflection, I am unsure about the claim that she was the first. The Root doesn't say who was first nor does the book by Vivian M. May which is available on Google Books. Is it in African American Firsts and does that book comment on Sadie Mossell Alexander and Eva Dykes? Philafrenzy (talk) 22:23, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

@Philafrenzy: From The Root: Dykes completed the requirements first, but Simpson, thanks to an earlier commencement, was the first to get her degree. As for the May source, that doesn't go into the "who received it first" details, but merely states the degree she received, her age, and the year. But I'm confused, the other source supporting that Simpson received her PhD first is not the May source, but the Potter source. These are currently cited correctly as well.
