Kānekapōlei[edit]

The Death of Captain Cook painted by John Webber

  • Reviewed: Antoine de Bosc de la Calmette
  • Comment: Five-fold expansion, need a little help rewording hook (must contain reference to Cook's death and her prevention of the kidnapping her husband and sons).

Created/expanded by KAVEBEAR (talk). Self nom at 18:33, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

  • Long enough and new enough (708 characters Nov. 26th to 4108), QPQ done, Article cited well and plagiarism check of Kuykendall source and Kamakau source found no hits, so meets policy. Image check is good on all accounts. Hook facts sourced each relevant sentence. Hook issue: the hook is good, but I see what you are saying, it doesn't flow quite right. Here are some proposed alternatives (longest 193 characters), just say if you like any or if they get you thinking about another alternative and this is good to go. Hope the options help, because this is good stuff. AbstractIllusions (talk) 00:23, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
*ALT1: ... that Kānekapōlei prevented the kidnapping of her husband King Kalaniʻōpuʻu and their sons by Captain Cook, the fight that followed led to Cook's death in Hawaii (pictured)?
*ALT2: ... that Kānekapōlei prevented the kidnapping of her husband King Kalaniʻōpuʻu and their sons by Captain Cook, which partially precipitated the fight on the beach that cost Cook his life (pictured)?
*ALT3: ... that Kānekapōlei stopped her husband King Kalaniʻōpuʻu and their sons on the beach while they were being kidnapped by Captain Cook and a fight ensued in which Captain Cook was killed (pictured)?
  • I think Alt1 with "partially" removed is the best since the kidnapping was a big part of the reason why Cook was killed along with the news of the death another chief.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 22:01, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
  • ALT1 Tweaked: ... that Kānekapōlei prevented the kidnapping of her husband King Kalaniʻōpuʻu and their sons by Captain Cook, which precipitated the fight on the beach that cost Cook his life (pictured)?
  • Agreed. Article and hook meet all requirements (184 characters). DYK good to go with ALT1(Tweaked). AbstractIllusions (talk) 23:43, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
  • The Family tree section gives dates for Kānekapōlei. These are problematic for two reasons: first, because the article doesn't, and if there aren't adequate sources for the article, there certainly aren't for the family tree. Second, the date is impossible: she is listed as having died before Kamehameha I, with whom she had a son, was born. This needs to be reconciled before the article can proceed further. • Fixed it. Those dates for the birth and death of Keawe II when I copied and paste some section of the family tree from List of monarchs of Hawaii. Her exact dates are not known.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 19:30, 22 December 2012 (UTC)
  • Thanks. Withdrawing objection above and removing ? icon that temporarily put approval in abeyance now that problematic material has been removed. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:51, 23 December 2012 (UTC)
